Jack in the Box
by almone R. gean

This a tale of four friends that mistakenly place themselves in the wrath of Grimbly Streaper, The Lord of Evil and Chaos' momentary alias. Our heroine, Maegan, and her fellow mischievous peers, Dahlia, Mac, and Blaine convince all their close family and friends to spend a day at the visiting Halloween carnival/circus. When the they visit the guess-my-age booth, The four friends are warned by an elderly man standing on the makeshift stage to not do anything underhanded. They disregard this and use their sly wit and athleticism to win a number of games, many of which were not won fairly. This angers Streaper, and he decides to get revenge on their disrespect and self-interest. The three are trapped in the carnival, and everyone is oblivious to their disappearance because Grimbly uses his power to make it so. Mac, Blaine, and Dahlia are kidnapped (in that order) by Grimbly's minion circus freaks and Maegan is left alone to win them back and save her other friends and family from the curse he has put on the carnival/circus' food. It's causing their insides to slowly ware away. Streaper is immortal; so, to defeat him Maegan must obtain the key to a trunk hidden somewhere in the attractions. Within that trunk is the only thing in the universe that can hold the god, neutralize his power, and reverse his curse. Read on and experience this night through Maegan's eyes as she tells the story to a group of friends during her drama class in the school auditorium. They assume it's made up but she knows all too well that everything that happened to her and her three friends is real.

I heard Dahlia's gasp from somewhere in the black of the mirror maze. I could sense her missing presence and I knew I was alone. They had taken her, my last companion, and now I was left. I reached into my pocket for my phone hoping for battery life, but knowing there would still be no signal. As I pulled it out, it slipped from my fingers and smashed to pieces on the concrete floor. As the pieces flew, the lights clicked on and I peered around to find nothing but my reflections. There was no sign of Dahlia, and no sign of a way out. It was then that I felt as if I was being watched, but I blew it off knowing that anyone would be paranoid in my situation. I needed to get out of the maze but I had no idea where I was or where the exit was, so I wandered. After a few minutes of a suffocating silence, I heard glass shatter behind me. I spun around to find myself staring at a replica of myself ambling towards me. I stood shocked and flabbergasted as "I" came closer. Our eyes met and I was chilled out of my stunned state. Running seemed the sensible thing, so I did. With no clue of what I was doing or where I was going, I weaved through the pathways. More and more glass burst behind me but I didn't look back. I had run myself into a dead-end. I turned and saw that through every broken mirror another me had stepped. The replicas were closing in. "I will take your place. I must have your life. I will have your head," they chanted in unison. I was not going to be taken down without a fight. I broke the glass behind me planning to use the larger shards for defense; but I was sucked through the opening. I opened my mouth to scream, but no sound escaped; all was silent. I felt a falling sensation but I was staring at nothingness.

Suddenly, I hit ground with an oomph, and stood as my vision cleared. It was too good to be true; the exit was in front of my face. If I walked through it I could escape, I could leave and forget about the whole night, but what about my friends and loved ones. There was an elderly man earlier at the guess my age booth. He was beside me now. He had white wisps of hair, speckled skin, and a croaky voice worn down by years of tobacco use. "Will you leave and abandon everyone you have come to love?" he asked. "Go back, accept his challenges, and defeat him for the sake of morality. Somewhere within this distorted nightmare of a place, he lies in wait, toying with you, and holding your friends hostage. Go back" His last words lingered in the air as he disappeared into the night. I turned away from the exit sullen but determined.
I blinked the wetness out of my eyes and when I
