Ornament Heart

Snow is falling
And I go downstairs
No tree, and an empty
Stare, and we notice
The note up on the door,
That you left
When you left.

Fourteen and the hope is thin
Forget all the photographs stolen.
Glassy eyes that are tired
From squinting,
Searching for you.

9:00, breaking down her walls,
An hour later shaking through the halls.
Another hallowed promise never caught
An intoxicated one-way call.

Polluting the
Dormitory
With the aroma
Of gin.

Petty cash,
Better gave then had.
Then it's too bad I'm scrounging all I have,
Another fucking washed-down,
Stained euphoria.

Bell chimes
The people wait in line,
Soul of my brother,
Drunk from another
Lonely night
And you can see it
From his insides.

Cashier asks 'Cash or Check'
At gunpoint he is more direct,
"You can take anything I have."

And we're hanging
Ornament hearts
Where'd you go?
Ever since you left for the city
It's been Christmas all year round.

And I'm wearing
The ornament hearts
That you left us,
Before you left us.
And where'd you go?
Ever since you left this town
We've been breaking down
All year round.

Doing pints over a shower drain,
Swallow hard as we share the blame
And we can hear
Our lungs
Explode.

Worn hands and an empty map,
Joke about a reunion we never had,
Talk about the noose from which he hung
Talk about prescription for lack of love.

Still red-hot from the Painter's touch,
Still hell-bent on giving up
A demon from my hands
Takes a knife and understands,
My misery

I wish I knew.

And I'm staring,
At the heart that you left broken.
Well at least I have-
A replacement.

And mom,
If you're out there,
We miss you
We hate you
Please come back.
