(Prologue)

The furious wailing of an infant reached his keen ears from several hundred yards away.

Mikhail's steps faltered into a complete stop, raising his celestial face up to bask under the glow of the full moon. Even from this great distance he could hear the hammering heartbeat of the frightened mortal infant. Mikhail knew all too well that in a mere hour that the wailing will stop along with the rapid heartbeats.

If the child did not die from the cold harshness of these woods then surely a predator like himself will come to finish the defenseless infant off.

It's the sad ways of the world, Mikhail thought mournfully. The weak die and the strong survive. Survival of the fittest.

"Mikhail?" his companion stepped beside him. "Why are you just standing there? Let's go."

"Do you not hear it, Gage?" Mikhail said, turning his ear to the direction of the crying and closed his eyes. "It is the sound of an abandoned human child."

Gage scowled, his features harsh yet handsome as he furrowed his brows. "So what? It'll be dead in an hour."

"Yes," Mikhail agreed solemnly, opening his eyes. "It's tragic."

"Let's get moving," Gage snapped impatiently, striding past him. "I'm still hungry and I can smell a pack of wild wolves near by. They should fill us up for now since you keep nagging that we shouldn't feed on human blood all the time."

Gage snorted at the very thought of it. He didn't know why Mikhail held a fondness for humans. He wasn't as kind and gentle as his maker, they can all go to hell for all he cares. Gage held no love for the beings who beat him to death and left him to die just because he had not been all human. If Mikhail had not stumbled upon him 100 years ago...

Gage stopped those thoughts from wandering any further. No sense in bringing up old memories that he'd rather not think about. The bastards who tried to kill him were long dead. Gage grinned menacingly. He had made sure of that.

Justice had been served, his vengeance merciless but swift..

"The wolves," Mikhail said, head snapping to the direction of the crying infant. "They are headed towards the child."

"Then I guess I was wrong," Gage shrugged, " it'll be dead in five minutes."

Mikhail took a hesitant step then another, then another until he was running swiftly though the forest, feet barely touching the ground. The long black coat he wore fluttered rapidly behind him as he moved with frightening grace and speed. He was nothing but a dark sliver streak to those close enough to catch a glimpse of his passing.

"Where the hell are you going!?" Gage snapped, catching up to him.

     "I will save the child."

      "What!? Why?"

Mikhail didn't answer. How could he when he himself did not know? It wasn't in his kinds nature to be kind yet...he could not let the child die. All he knew was that the infant needed him, that the little lamb was defenseless...
