Forced To Hide A Murderer

I had finally finished brushing my teeth and was now headed to my small bedroom, where my mum was fluffing my pillows and such. She was so protective over me, I almost felt bad. I had been homeschooled since I was four, honestly I think I've been off this property once in my entire life, and that was the night of the fire, in which my father couldn't make it out alive.

I chewed on my lower lip, inhaling a large breath before stepping into my room. It smelled of cinnamon, my favourite scent other than lilac.

I've never seen an actual lilac, with the exception of pictures on the internet. I'm still trying to convince my mum to begin growing them in the garden.

The walls of my bedroom were white, allowing more sunlight in. The sheets on my bed were both black and white, since the colour scheme were those two shades.

"Evening, Shay," my mum greeted, showing me her million dollar smile that could make any guy go crazy.

"Evening," I grinned. I climbed into bed, and received a soft kiss to the forehead.

"Sweet dreams, honey," she brushed back my bangs.

"You too." I displayed a bright, cheerful smile.

She sighed. "You're so kind to others."

The weakness in her tone made me frown.

"Goodnight." I noticed tears well up in her eyes, and I quickly pulled her in for a hug.

My mum still hadn't gotten over father's passing, well neither have I, as it's only been two months, but she was the most affected. They loved each other so much, the connection they had was unbreakable, until the fire. Now I'm the only one in her life, and she is determined to keep me safe.

"I love you so much, and your father did too. You know that, right?" Her voice was raspy and cracked.

I pressed my lips together in a thin line. "Yes."

She sighed shakily, pulling back. "I love you."

"You already said that." I whispered.

"I can say it a million times and even that won't show how much I love and care for you." A small smile appeared on her face. "See you in the morning."

I nodded as she pulled out of my embrace to yank the cord on the lamp, sending the entire room into darkness, with the exception of the moonlight shining through my window just a few feet away. She padded out of my bedroom, shut my door and went into hers, leaving me alone.

I know it sounds rather odd, to be seventeen and still have your mum tuck you in. But she is protective and that's what protective parents do. I don't mind, though.

I spent a few hours secretly on my Nook, reading stories. I love to read and listen to music, those are my two passions. I'm a terrible singer so I think one day I'd like to be an author, or maybe work in a music store.

It was now about midnight, and my mum was asleep. She's a heavy sleeper so if I happen to accidentally drop my electronic reader on the ground by accident, she would never know of it because she would be sleeping. She could sleep through a hurricane. After reading half a novel, I thought I'd finally get to bed. If mother found out I had stayed up this late, she would not be happy.

I quickly and quietly slipped my Nook under my bed and made myself comfortable. Comfortable, meaning placing two pillows in front of my stomach and back. A third pillow was used for my head to rest on.

I've always thought that if I surround myself in pillows, no evil can get to me. I smiled weakly to myself.

Just as my eyes were about to drop, I heard a bang, then not even a nanosecond later, a loud crash.

I shot up, since the loud, ear-piercing sound appeared to be just feet away.

It was then I saw my window, shattered, as if someone had used a gun to shoot right through it. Tiny shards of glass sprinkled the area of carpet. I covered my mouth with my hand, before slowly removing it.

What just happened?

I gasped, seeing a tall, dark figure desperately jump through the hole in my broken window, as if he was trying to get away from someone. I couldn't make out his features since the darkness of my room only displayed a silhouette.

"Fuck!" I heard him whisper harshly to himself. Blue and red lights flashed outside from a short distance away, and I began to panic. I knew this man was being chased by police... and he was in my bedroom.

The man's eyes widened as soon as he saw me sitting upright, staring straight at him. I knew right there that I should have pretended to be asleep.
