In a flash, Rosemera had whisked me away, and we were speeding down the road back towards the group home. Rosemera said my birth mother was back, I felt excited and angry all at once. My birth mother had thrown me away, the tainted baby that needed to be disposed of, and I hadn’t even heard so much as a whisper from her in the past ten years. I wondered what she looked like, no one even knew her real name, and all I knew about her is that she was really young when she had me. The story was that my mother was twelve years old when she had me, slut of the town, threw me away at the first chance she got.

So many questions and obscenities ran through my head, my mind was spinning. Rosemera had crash parked in the parking lot of the group home and gotten to the front doors, I was still sitting in the van contemplating on what I wanted to say. I was still in shock when Rosemera yanked me out of the van with the force of a horse drawn carriage, and whisked me up the stairs, and into her office. I barely caught a glance at a woman that was sitting on one of the chairs that I was in just yesterday morning. The lady had brown hair, and her skin was the color of mocha hot chocolate. Rosemera sat me down in her office, and walked over to her chair behind her desk and sat down with her hands clasped in a triangle shape. The groan of her chair as she sat startled me from my trance.

“Jayanti Hoem, your mother is here, and she would like to speak with you. I know this can come as a shock, but it is protocol to ask the child before we set up a meeting with their birth parents.” Rosemera was staring at me as if she expected me to have questions, I had none. “Your mother arrived this morning and requested to speak with you, and usually we don’t allow that unless we ask the child for a sit down first, but considering the circumstances-“

“What circumstances?” I interrupted.

“Don’t you know who your mother is?”

“You mean the woman that left me in the dumpster when I was only a few days old? Yeah, I know that woman.” I made sure to ooze every word with sarcasm, just so Rosemera could get the loathing in my words.

“Jayanti, no one ever told you that your mother was Cassidy Williams?” I stared at Rosemera, dumbfounded. My head was spinning with so many questions. “You know, Cassidy Williams, the actress?”

“I know who she is,” I said flatly.

“Great then, you’ll see her then?”

“Wait, I never said I would.”

“Well, why not? This is Cassidy Williams we’re talking about!”

“No, you’re talking about her. As far as I know, she’s the dead beat mother that has been the source of ten years of pain.” I got up and marched over to the door, “and I don’t have any reason to see her.”

I wrenched open the door and stormed out, making sure to slam the door behind me. As I stormed out I glanced at the woman again, my mother, the famous actress. The woman who can seem to afford twelve houses, but not a child that is her own. I slammed the door to the office, and sprinted down the hallways to my room, shut the door, and sprawled out on one of the bunk beds. Tears streamed down my face and pooled on the comforter beneath me. Heaving on the bed, I didn’t hear that someone else had come in and occupied the room with me. The person sat on the bed quietly while I sobbed loudly in the cover.

“If you’re going to tell me to speak with her, Rosemera, I’m not going to.” I said through sobs.

“I’m not Rosemera,” the familiar cracking voice said. I looked up from the bed to see Bernard’s sad eyes looking me over. “You okay?”

“Yeah, I’m fine,” I lied, wiping my bloodshot eyes. “I just need a minute.”

“No, you need a friend.”

“Yeah, well I don’t have any, so-“
