Chapter 1

I woke up with the sound of my alarm clock beside me as I tried to rub my eyes to get a clearer view of my new room. I just finished unpacking last night and organized all my belongings. It still looked a bit messy but I have the whole summer to fix it just the way I want it to be. It's the last week of July and I've got more than a month to settle in.

I heard my mom knocked on my door.  "Get ready, we're leaving in thirty minutes."

I live with my mom alone. My dad left us to go to Europe for his job and he hasn't visited us for five years now . We still talk on the phone or email each other sometimes. My mom and I just moved to California for a job that we both accepted, mostly me. We work as spies, I've been trained since I was a kid.

I got out of bed and headed to the bathroom for a quick shower. And i rapidly changed and blow dried my dark brown hair. I threw on a striped loose tank with my skinny jeans and a pair of flats. My mom drove me to Berryhill Academy - a school for aspiring young spies,  for a meeting about my first mission. They said that it was about time for me to experience and earn my official spy certificate. The official spy certificate would give me the power to work as a spy in the Academy and gain money. Iif ever I pass this mission, that would be my very first big step towards being a fully-trained spy.

We arrived at the Academy and it didn't look any different from the one that was in New York. It looked absolutely the same. We entered the school and walked towards the elevator. We stepped in a room with at least ten people waiting for us. My mom and I grabbed a seat and sat down as the meeting started. I never enjoyed these kind of meetings but it was about my first mission so i tried to be attentive. The headmaster of the school welcomed us to California and started the discussion about my mission in this wonderful state.

"Have you started investigating yet, Miss Finnell?" Mrs. Hamilton, the headmaster asked me.

"As a matter of fact, i have and i'm willing to start as soon as possible." I replied. The mission was pointed to me last month. I took the time to research about it and investigate more about my target. My mom was excited about it too since my mission was her idea. I didn't know why she suggested it but surprisingly, the spy cabinet agreed with her. The spy cabinet are the group of spies that runs the Berryhill Academy's rules. They also give and approve missions to students especially to the ones that are about get their certificates and other things to achieve. They are basically the government when it comes to the spy world. Berryhill was founded in 1972 by Alexander Berryhill who passed away in 2001. The company now belongs to his children.

Mrs. Hamilton talked about the rules of my mission and the other things that i needed to know. She said that my mission will officially start next week, Monday. I was given a month to accomplish it or else, i will end up to Level 1 again. In order to earn your official spy certificate, you will need at least five years of spy studies. And you need to at least be 16 years old. Basically, if i fail my mission, i will need to start over again. It took me five years to be in this position. I was trained by my parents since i was eight. I started spy school when i was eleven years old and i just turned sixteen last month. My mission does not sound too hard for me and I think it's not much of a spy work so I went along with it. Mrs. Hamilton also mentioned that i should not expose Berryhill's identity. If everyone finds out that i work as a spy, a big punishment will await.

It wasn't too long when they dismissed us. It was Saturday and i had a lot of cleaning to do in our new apartment. My mom looked happy about my mission and I haven't seen her that excited for such a long time. She has been really upset since my dad left and she never got a job instead of being a part of Berryhill's spy cabinet. She tried to not show her sadness but i can always tell that she misses him. Sometimes, i feel like something's bothering her a lot. I don't know much about my mom's past, she never talked about it with me and i never tried asking her. I thought that the present matters more than the past now. I tried to focus on what was happening instead of what already happened.

My mom drove to the salon to get my hair dyed blonde. It was part of my mission and we did what Mrs. Hamilton instructed us to do. They figured I needed a new identity or at least a new look for my mission. My mom and them sounded like they already sorted things out for me before we had the meeting.

"Are you excited to get a new hair color?" My mom asked and I saw one of her rare smiles.

"I'm not too sure about it. Is it necessary? I mean, i'm already changing my name for this." I replied. They also agreed to change my name from Jordan Finnell to Sophie Clark. I understood why i needed to do that but changing my hair color was too hard to explain.

"Come on, it's just for a month and you'll get your natural hair color back." I nodded as we stopped in the parking lot. We got out of the car and headed inside the salon.

"Appointment for Berryhill." My mom said to the girl by the reception desk. The lady led us to a room and made me sat on a chair that was facing the mirror. I figured that the salon was working for Berryhill. After a few minutes, a middle-aged lady came in and greeted us.

"Is this Jordan Finnell?" The lady smiled at me.

I nodded.

"Great! Now, we'll transform you to a Sophie Clark." She exclaimed. I didn't expect for a whole makeover. I just let the lady cut my hair and style it with whatever. I tried to relax myself and closed my eyes. After an hour or so, i realized i have fallen asleep. I got woken up by my mom telling me it was time to go. I looked at the mirror and i was completely shocked to see a different girl but with the same brown eyes as me. The lady gave me side bangs and cut my hair a little shorter than what I had before. My dark brown hair turned into a blonde one, i smiled as I faced myself in the mirror. I might as well think of keeping this hair color for awhile.

My mom asked me if i wanted to go home but i asked her to stop at the mall for awhile. When we got there, we went in our separate ways and agreed on meeting in the parking lot after an hour and a half. I stopped by at my favorite stores to look at some clothings and accessories I might like to wear for my mission. I didnt need new clothes for it, I just absolutely love shopping. I also figured that I might buy new outfits that would suit my new blonde hair.

An hour have already passed and i saw a bunch of girls running. I was curious on what was going on so i walked fast and headed to where they were going. I saw a lot of cameras and flashing. I stopped when i realized it was too crowded so I decided to go back to where i was. Suddenly, someone bumped into me that made me fall on the floor. I noticed that the screaming girls were running towards us. The guy offered his hand to help me get up and I kindly took it. I looked up at who it was. Shocked was written all over my face when I realized it was Chase Hensley.
