Well it’s Saturday. I’m glad schools over, mainly because Shelly goes home on weekends. The party is tonight, Kaya and I are leaving with a bunch of others on the midday bus back to mine. Till then I’ve decided to meet Luke in the library to start on the big Jesus project.
“So I’ve checked out these books. They’re not that great but we’ll manage.” He says once we’ve setup laptops.
“They’ll be fine, hey ah... probably best not to tell Shelly about this.”
“Yeah, I honestly don’t see what she’s worried about.”
“I know, I’ve known you forever, you’re like my cousin.” It was true. We went through primary school together and although Luke was hot and really nice, I can’t imagine myself seeing him in that way. We sat down and started looking through the books for something remotely interesting.
“She’s probably just intimidated.” Luke says after 5 minutes of searching.
“How so?”
“Well as you said, we’ve known each other for ages and you are... um.”
“Yes?”
“Um... nice looking.” His face scrunched a bit, like he was afraid of his words.
“ha, so your saying she’s afraid you’re going to suddenly realise you’ve been in love with me for years and drop her on the sidewalk?”
“Something like that.” He said with a smile, loosening up a bit. We continue our pointless searching until finally, after 10 minutes, I came across a usable page of information.
“Hey, how about this?” I say pointing at the page. He leant over to have a look when I looked up. Our noses touched and our eyes locked. I got this strange tingling feeling through my body. We stayed like that for what seemed like forever when he suddenly broke away, gathering his books.
“I um... I have to go.” he breathed. He left the library and I let out a breath I didn’t realize I had been holding. What? I had just told myself that I didn’t have feelings for Luke and I was right... right? No there was nothing there, nothing.
I was in the middle of texting Jeremy on the bus when my phone rang. It was Luke.
“Hey Jess, it’s Luke.”
“I do have caller ID Luke.” I said with a small laugh.
“Oh, yeah, right.” He said with a forced laugh.
“Listen, I’m sorry about walking out on you in the library.”
“Hey, no worries, seriously, I get it.”
“Cool thanks but... um... see Shelly kind of fund out about the party and she doesn’t really want me going.” He sounded scared. Luke never sounded like this. He was always the strong, independent guy; no one could push him around. But every time he’s with Shelly he crumbles.
“Is she there?”
“No, she’s not.”
“Well do you want to come?”
“Of course, I wouldn’t miss one of your parties for the world.”
“Well it’s your decision isn’t it? Don’t let her walk over you Luke; remember what we were talking about this morning? She won’t leave you, she can’t.”
“Ok, I’ll be there.” He said more confidently and hung up.
“Luke?” Kaya says beside me.
“Yeah, Shelly doesn’t want him to come.”
“I gathered that. She is such a bitch.”
“I know but hey, was going to have an awesome time right?”
“ye...” she was cut off by her phone.
“It’s Jeremy.” She taped speaker and held it between us.
“Kaya?” Jeremy’s voice came on. It sounded like he’d been crying.
“Yeah, and Jess. Jeremy, what’s wrong?”
“He broke up with me; the asshole broke up with me.”
“Shit.” I said. Jeremy had been with Tyler for almost a year. he had been at his house for the night.
“Were are you now?”
“At your place.”
“Ok, we’ll be there soon.”
When we got home Jeremy was sitting at counter with an ice tea mum had bought him. Mum emerged from the lounge wearing a floor length burgundy dress. Dad appeared behind her in his trademark tux.
