I backed away from the happy couple, my eyes cold. How dare he? How dare he sit there and pull all this soulmate bullshit then have the audacity to be with another woman. I crossed my arms.
“My name is not snack, it’s Samantha.” I said to the woman. The woman wore a yellow dress and black leather jacket over it, expressing femininity but at the same time a toughness hidden. She put her hands on her hips and laughed. She turned to face me fully. Her mouth opened and she looked at Cole. He nodded his head. I swear I saw the faint glimmer of tears in her eyes. She smiled in my direction and came closer to me.
“I am sorry, I thought you were a willing donor.” She widened her eyes and looked at Cole who laughed. I’m glad he thought this was funny.
“Samantha, this is my sister, Annabelle.” He pulled me to his side, wrapping an arm around my shoulders. Sister? Wow…I feel stupid. Why did I feel jealous?
“Yes, his sister.” She stepped closer to me and raised her hand to shake. I took it, hesitant at first. She did just say I was a snack.
I stepped away from Cole, not wanting her to get the impression I was here willingly. “So, is this…” Annabelle left the question open ended, waiting for one of us to finish it.
“My Soulmate.” We both said at the same time. She looked between us. Her face was calm and neutral at first, but that quickly ended when she heard Cole. Her face broke out into a giant smile and she pulled me into a hug.
“Oh my goodness!!! My new sister!” she laughed and twirled me around. “Very hot Cole, you lucky bastard.” She punched him in the shoulder. I stepped away from her.
“I’m not his soulmate, okay!” I yelled. I stomped into the closet, slamming the door behind me. I didn’t want to deal with this shit. I just wanted to get into something comfy.
I found a pair of yoga pants and a grey tank. I took off all the makeup and jewelry and finally felt good. I hated dressing up, it was a nuisance. I stepped out from the closet, hoping they had left. But I knew better then to wish in this place, because they never came true. Where was jiminy cricket when I needed him?
“Oh good you’re done! Now we can hang out.” Annabelle grabbed my hand and pulled me from the closet.
“Call me Anna, by the way.” She said. Cole smiled. I glared in his direction. “Why are you smiling?” I asked, self-conscience.
“No reason. I just like seeing you two together…” he chuckled a bit and walked away. “Don’t over do it, Anna.” He said and kissed me on the cheek before leaving. I wiped my hand across my cheek, rubbing off the cooties.
“You’re so funny.” She said when he left. I raised an eyebrow at her. “What do you mean?” I asked.
We began walking down the hall towards the entertainment room. “It’s just that, you are his soulmate. Why do you act like you hate him?” she asked as we entered the room.
“Because he stole me away. How would you feel?” I asked angrily.
“If he was my soulmate, I would be fucking ecstatic! I still haven’t met mine yet.” She said, her face a little glum. For some reason I felt a kinship with this woman. She seemed familiar, like I knew her. Maybe she reminded me of someone I knew at school. I placed a hand on her shoulder.
“You will find someone someday. But for right now, enjoy your freedom.” I squeezed her shoulder and pushed back her hair from her face, something I would never do with a stranger. Her eyes widened and she smiled.
“I know you may feel like this is the end of the world, but believe me when I tell you my brother is an amazing man. He has lots of love to give, and if you accept it willingly, you will have an amazing life together.” She said sitting on the giant leather couch. I sat too, staring ahead at the giant screen. “Yeah.” There was no point arguing with her, he was her brother and she would defend him to the end. She must have noticed my glum mood when she stood and clapped her hands.
“Okay, let’s watch a movie then!” she said laughing. She went into the adjoining room with was lined with almost every movie ever made. “What do you feel like watching?” I shrugged, and then realized she couldn’t see me, so I yelled, “I don’t care.”
