Dedicated to someone who I couldn't have written this without. For reading my numerous drafts that you probably grew sick of, Thank you. Even thought it didn't win, it's still one of the best things I have ever written so thanks for pushing me until I got it to as close to perfection as humanly possible.

A/N Halcyon is pronounced[hal-see-uhn]
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sorrow consumed her darkling eyes. The night air swept past her, sending a wave of chills up her spine. As the poison cut through her immune system, she felt her mind drift between reality and the darkness waiting to consume her. She could feel it settling in and making itself at home, destroying her from within. How did this happen? Halcyon felt drowsy and unfocused, she could barely link words into sentences. Her hand clenched into a fist, ready to thump her chest all the while hoping to feel something, anything.
Halcyon felt as if her chest had burst into flames before her fist had even made contact. Something was wrong. She may be disorientated but even she could tell; this was not a normal symptom of the poison her professor had injected into her. Too tired to scream and too delusional to even know her own name, Halcyon had no choice but to surrender. She had lost everything. No one she knew recognized her. What did she have to live for? Her boyfriend was dating her sister, her best friend had run off to Las Vegas with a biker they swore they wouldn’t touch, and to make matters even worse, the closest thing she had to a father had just left her to die in the alley.
Maybe she should have seen it coming. When your entire world is turned upside down and twisted into something you’re afraid of, are you really going to stay away from the first person to speak to you in days? Or are you going to be naïve and trust him with your life? Halcyon couldn’t understand how the professor - who gave her everything she ever wanted - could turn his back on her so easily.
When Halcyon had first met the professor she had described him as a cryptic and evasive man but it wasn’t long before it became evident that he was overindulgent. He criticized Halcyon relentlessly for her anti-social behaviour, said it wasn’t normal. Tired of being lectured about something she couldn’t change, Halcyon snuck out to see the stars and to be able to walk freely beneath the moonlight, hand in hand with a boy with enticing lakes of grey and a soul seeking voice.
If only she hadn’t invited him inside, then maybe she would have a future. True, she wouldn’t have been entirely happy but it was a future all the same which is more than she’ll ever have now. How was she supposed to know that the reason the professor had taken her in was because he thought he could control her? How was she supposed to know that once he lost that control she would die? She could never have predicted that a boy with almond eyes and dark hair was enough for the professor to feel it her death was necessary.
Was falling in love really that bad?
Even now, she didn’t have the heart to consider him as regret. Despite the fact that it was because of him Death had come knocking on her door, her love for him burned brighter still. Halcyon’s head swayed from side to side as she tried her best to figure a way out of this. Now she knew the professor was not to be trusted but, she had also come to the revelation that the professor had always indulged in games.
This led to a series of thoughts desperately trying to find the antidote, her mind was already spinning out of control but now it was working as hard as her heart should have been beating. Halcyon was always a clever girl; everyday she sat there on the outside watching the world change, patiently waiting for something but unaware of what it was until it found her.
