Cry’s P.O.V

~Two Weeks Later~

The rain pounded on the large glass window but it was hardly audible over the low hum of drunken conversation. Although I tried to ignore it, the stale smell of hard liquor was still sickening to me, just like it had been the first time I’d come here. I also tried to ignore the ever present cloudiness in my mind but it was impossible. I wanted to deny it...deny that I relied on the alcohol to keep me numb.

A now common news story was playing on the small TV pinned to the wall. The story of Experience Company and the unfortunates who’d been tricked into their twisted games...those unfortunates who the police kept anonymous for both safety and privacy reasons. So, as I sat here, listening to the two men beside me talk passionately about how the contestants must have known something was wrong, that it was their own fault...they remained blissfully unaware of how that very contestant was sitting right beside them.

They were obviously practicing their English.

My grip on the glass tightened as anger began to burn inside of me. How could they say that? The news stated that one of the contestants was killed...How could they speak bad of the dead? They had no fucking idea!

Taking in a deep breath, I sat back and held my hand up, catching the attention of the lady serving behind the bar. She walked over to me, her expression warm as I had become a familiar face this past week. I’d come to discover that her name was Rosa.

“The same?” she asked me, pointing towards my glass. I nodded in response, feeling at home with her thick Swedish accent. She turned her back to me, reaching up to grab the large bottle of...something. I couldn’t even remember what I was drinking anymore. I kept thinking that I should just call it a day and head back to the apartment but...I couldn’t seem to face even my friends. All they wanted to do what talk about him...and I’d be okay with that...if they didn’t always use the past tense.

‘He was a good man.’

‘We know you miss him.’

‘He would have wanted you to be happy.’

That’s what got to me. They just constantly reminded me that he was gone.

“Is there no more better place to be?” Rosa asked me and I smiled at her broken English. She pushed the glass over to me and I took a swing, only to find that she was still lingering near me, waiting for an answer.

I shook my head, glancing up but never allowing myself to admire her blonde waves and shocking green eyes, half hidden between long eyelashes.

“Have you...erm...been in Sweden a large time?” she asked me.

“No...I came here with some friends for a funeral.”

“Oh...erm...I am sorry for my English,” she murmured before leaning a little closer. “You lost someone...I think to be with friends is a more better place than here.”

She held my gaze, her eyes filled with sympathy and understanding. I don’t know what it was but she was the first person whose sympathy I didn’t despise. Maybe it was because she didn’t know me; she didn’t know the full story.

“I finish my work soon...I can drive you to home.”

Contemplating her offer I thought about everything that had happened these past days. The police investigation had been surprisingly fast. With Paul dead, Anna had admitted to everything. Stephano, Nicky and Snake had gone into hiding although Anna emphasised they were trying to stop her and Paul. As soon as the police had let me out, I’d flown straight to Sweden. Despite my mother protests...I knew this is where I needed to be...until the funeral anyway.
