Sophie & Jaylen: Their Story of Survival

Epilogue:

        "Sophie! Sophie, where are you?" I heard Jaylen yelling for me in the distance, but sadly enough I couldn't reply to let him know where I was. "Sophie!"

        The man who stood only inches from me turned in the direction of Jaylen's voice. His nose was high in the air as if he was trying to smell everything surrounding him. Luckily for me, I was down-wind from him. 

        "Sophie!" Jaylen continued, his impatience growing rapidly. The man slowly began to walk in the opposite direction. Thankfully it was away from me, but also meaning towards Jaylen. 

        "What do I do? What do I do?" my mind raced, sweeping through imaginary filing cabinets trying to find even the slightest hint of an idea. "Think. Think. Think." 

        As I closed my eyes a horrific scream came from the direction the infected man had gone. . .the direction Jaylen was. I jumped to my feet and braced the crow bar in my hand as I hit a dead sprint. The man was in my view and I could merely see he had pinned someone to the ground. My mind, thinking of the worst-case-scenerio, threw images of Jaylen's lifeless body lying on the ground at me. 

     "DIE!!!" I screamed as I swung the crow bar at the man's disfigured head. I hit him repeatedly until finally his body slumped to the ground and went limp. Not releasing the crow bar from my grip I leaned forward to check the body beside the man. I grabbed my flashlight and slowly lifted the light to the unknown body. "Please don't be Jaylen. Please don't be Jaylen." I prayed silently. I opened my eyes one at a time only to find a boy, who couldn't have been much older than 14, dead. I placed my shaking fingers on his throat to check for a pulse, but I didn't find one. 

     I sat there for a moment contemplating on what to do next when I was grabbed from behind and pulled into the woods. The dark shadows consuming my wriggling body.
