Gay Marriage - Short Story

I never thought something like this would be discriminated and be diminished of rights. Gay Marriage is illegal here where I live, no gay person is able to have any rights to marry. Apparently, it’s inferior of that to regular marriage – classified as a one man and woman proposal. No one here cares about the rights of Gay Marriage except for the gays that live here, my friends and my lover, Cody.

Cody and I have been in a relationship for almost four years now and he proposed to me a year ago. But it’s saddening to know the fact that we can’t actually marry each other and we can only be engaged for so long. Once the news came out to him, he literally was pissed about it. Truth is, he wanted to go punch the crap out of whoever made Gay Marriage illegal.

Cody, he’s not so much as the stereotypical gay person – all feminine and weak – he’s masculine and strong, so generally, he would take the news as something very offensive and trigger his temper. He sometimes has an anger management problem, so he would legitimately fight for our equal rights in marriage, even if it meant for him to be sent to jail. He wouldn’t care, as long as he got the chance to marry me one day.

It’s already hard enough being in a community that is discriminated, inferior, and being downgraded to fewer rights than straight people. Why can’t we have the same equality of rights as everyone else? That doesn’t make any sense. Isn’t everyone supposed to be equal and no one superior than others? Aren’t we taught to respect people equally and treat everyone as a human being?

A question I often think of when it comes to marriage is, “Why is marriage labelled as Gay Marriage for gays and Marriage for everyone else?” Shouldn’t marriage be for everyone? Isn’t that what it’s supposed to be about? Love, companionship, and special bonds between partners should be experienced by gays and not only straight people. They aren’t the only people who can love another human being for who they are and everything about them. Marriage to me is something special to the heart and can be the true loyalty of two people. And I want to experience that true loyalty and love with Cody.

My name is Tyler Montgomery and I am a 26 year old author that wants to marry my lover, Cody Creighton, an engineer. Unfortunately for us, as I stated before, there is no rights for us, all we can be is engaged which is not really the same thing. We, and all our friends who support us, will fight for the rights we already should be having.

Currently, I am sitting on my computer chair facing the computer that’s on the computer desk. Cody sits in another computer chair next me while some of our friends – three of them – are behind us leaning against the sofa. Kayla, who is a major supporter for Gay Marriage rights, and is straight, has a temper like Cody, and whatever you say to her that’s negative about Gay Marriage, she’ll cuss at you. She literally will. Dylan is another straight person who supports Gay Marriage and the gay community, he defends and continues to fight for rights online. Our last friend here, Alexis, is a lesbian, who is in the same situation Cody and I are in. She’s engaged to her lover, Loretta, since four months now.

As of right now, we’re checking the petition we created as a group as a step to gain our rights. We plan on spreading this petition, getting everyone in the gay community here to sign in. What we are planning to do with this petition is to be part of removing the banning of Gay Marriage in North Carolina, hopefully marking a turnaround in this state. Our main target is the National Organization of Marriage which opposes Gay Marriage in North Carolina. We’re attempting to reach the president of the group, Brian Brown.

“If this, Brian Brown, guy takes us to court, I can have permission to punch him in his face, right?” Cody asks me, like I can give him permission.

“I volunteer to assist in the punching of, Brian Brown,” says Kayla. “Obama supports gay marriage, why can’t he and everyone do the same?”
