“Ready?”

Laila nodded, putting all thoughts of Jace aside to answer Katie’s question. It was time for their very first cheer about the team, which meant the pep rally was about to kick off. Not that the band and mascot hadn’t already done their job with that. Nearly all the students were on their feet, shouting or dancing along with the music. Laila shot a sideways grin at Caleb just before they went into the cheer.

Time to put on a show, she thought happily. This one didn’t have any flying or exciting tumbling in it, but it still made her happy nonetheless. It meant she was that much closer to the dance. She was actually looking forward to it now, Jace and all. Only to mess with him, of course.

Laila tossed her pom poms aside and did a toe touch as the cheer came to an end, quickly followed by a chorus of her name that was somehow louder than the collective crowd. She looked up in the stands to see Amanda and Bonnie waving at her, both beaming and loudly screaming her name. She grinned and waved back, then caught sight of Trevon and Brandon beside them. They were both shouting and waving even more enthusiastically than Amanda and Bonnie. She laughed and waved back. This was exactly why she loved pep rallies and games; the never ending attention it brought from all corners of any crowd.

“Let’s see which year can scream the loudest!” Katie’s loud voice cut through Laila’s thoughts, “Freshmen, lemme hear you scream!”

Miya and Shantelle yelled more encouragements while the freshmen gladly obliged, standing up and stamping their feet, shouting and screaming out random phrases or insults to the other years. Laila smiled and glanced at Ramani, who’d also opted to skip the encouragement job. Ramani didn’t want to because she wasn’t much of a yeller, but Laila had skipped the task because she needed to save her voice for singing. A little shouting for cheer was alright, but being in charge of talking to an entire gymnasium would be way too much strain on her vocal cords. Especially three days before the big Chicago audition.

“SOPHOMORES!” Shanti’s voice this time, loud enough to cut through all the freshmen cheers.

“Let’s hear the juniors!” Miya yelled, waving her poms poms for them all to stand. The girls from Laila’s ballet class who’d told her about Distression’s upcoming album grinned and waved at her. She shot them a warm smile before spinning on her heel and practically skipping off. The call to juniors was her cue to go grab herself a chair. Her, and all the other seniors on her squad. A couple others were already following behind.

“I’m so fucking excited,” Ramani whispered, giggling as she caught up to Laila. She grabbed herself a chair and dragged it off, pulling a second one for Katie as well. Ashley and Victoria murmured their agreements while getting their own. They took two extras for Miya and Shantelle, while Sophia and Kalie hauled off two of their own.

“What’re you doing fairy?” Jace asked, watching curiously as Laila towed a chair past him.

“You’ll see,” She smiled coyly before picking it up and quickly running off. It was only a matter of seconds before the music would start. The regular seniors were currently screaming their part, and the second that was over Caleb and the younger girls would clear out for the long awaited dance.
