Chapter 1
"Breathe. Just breathe." she told herself as she leaned against a brick wall.
She was vaguely aware of people staring at her but decided not bother acknowledging them. Although she was dressed in her second best dress and bonnet, she still felt self conscious.
Today was Anna Gibson's first day as a governess to the Lansing family. She had a long day already, having to catch the carriage to town at dawn and had only just arrived. She could feel a weariness pulling at her body but was too nervous to let it fully take her. Anna was just getting the last butterflies out when she heard a voice.
"Are you alright there miss?"
Anna looked up to see a good looking young man, about 20 years old. He was dressed rather nicely, which automatically put him out of her range of perspectives.
"Yes!" she replied, startled at first. " Thank you for your concern monsieur. I was only catching my breath." She curtsied quickly and tried to walk away.
"Hold on." he said with a rather powerful hold. I would like to know the name of such a pretty girl as you."
"My name is Anna Gibson monsieur."
"Well Miss Gibson, do you have business with the Anders here?" pointing to the house the brick wall she was leaning on surrounded.
"No monsieur. I'm going up the road I believe. To the Lansing place? Do you know of it?"
"Ah, I reckon I do. Would you care for an escort."
"Oh no monsieur. I'll be going now." she curtsied quickly and turned to leave.
"Do you mind if I accompany you anyhow Anna?" he asked, making her turn around again.
"If it pleases you Monsieur."
As they walked the man asked her a few questions. She answered politely but didn't let he guard down. At the edge of the steps to the Lansings' home she bowed deeply and thank the stranger. He answered by kissing the back of her hand and leaving.
Anna quickly turned around, slightly flushed and walked up the steps to her future home.
