Chapter 2

I was more excited for school than usual today.  I had no idea why, I just felt like something completely unexpected was going to happen.  That was the only thought that was able to get me to climb out of my bed.  Well, that and the fact that there was only two months left in school.

As soon as my legs touched the cold, hardwood floor, I could practically hear my bed calling back to me.  I tried to ignore the thought of crawling back under the warm covers and drifting back to sleep as I walked towards my bathroom.  I quickly washed my face and brushed my teeth, making strange faces at the mirror as I did so.  I don’t know why I do that; it’s just my routine.

I felt as though today was going to be a special occasion, so I had to dress accordingly.  I picked out my favorite dress.  It was wavy and wasn’t skin tight so I could breathe in it, unlike other girls who wore dresses that were so tight they constricted their lungs.  The lower back of the dress was cut out, which added to the extra cuteness.

I grabbed my brush and yanked at the knots in my blonde hair.  After my hair was straight down my back, I took a hairpin and clipped my hair back so it was out of my eyes.

I hated putting on make-up but I always put it on anyway.  I quickly drew my eyeliner in and put one thin layer of mascara on.  After my morning routine was completed, I sprinted out the door of my bedroom.

“Mom! Dad! I’m going to school,” I shouted as I grabbed a granola bar from the pantry.  I listened for a reply but realized they had probably already left for work.  It wasn’t a big deal; sometimes I just wished they were around more.  I shrugged off the feeling and slipped my feet into my black Vans.  I grabbed my backpack and then I was off to school.

As I drove to school, I kept getting the feeling that I was being followed.  Deep down something was telling me that there was something or someone trailing me, and it scared the crap out of me.  I checked my mirrors to see if there was anyone behind me.  Sure enough, there was a red Range Rover right on my tail.  I switched lanes to see if they would copy my actions.  They did.

I was on the verge of a total freak out.  Someone was following me.   I was going to die today.

“I’m too young to die,” I screamed, then pressed my foot harder on the gas.  I was doing forty miles an hour in a twenty-five zone, but I didn’t even care.  I was going to get away from this person and save my skin, even if it meant getting a ticket in the process.  Because, hey, if I was stopped by a policeman, at least I’d be protected.

I looked in my mirror again, thinking I had lost the person, but they were closer than they were before! It didn’t matter because I could see the school gates come into view.  I was almost there!

Then I heard the sirens.

I couldn’t see the police car, but my better judgment told me not to ignore a police siren when I hear one.

“Come on! It’s not even my fault; I was being chased,” I yelled at myself as a hit the wheel repeatedly.  I drew in a breathe of air to calm myself then pulled over.

I heard a light tap on my window.  My hand automatically reached for the button.

“Ma’am, do you know how fast you were going?” a very familiar voice asked, sounding smug.  I froze.  This could not be happening.

“Hunter, what the hell are you doing?” I shouted, making him jump.  I smiled victoriously as he straightened out his black leather jacket.

“Don’t curse at me, young lady.  I’m a cop,” he berated, winking at me.  I was really starting to get tired of his winks.

“No you’re not.  Now go back to your car.  I’m waiting for the real police officer to come give me a ticket.  Some lunatic was chasing me today and--,” I stopped talking.  He looked at me expectantly, waiting for me to figure it out.

“And,” he teased.

“You were the one following me, weren’t you?” He shrugged, acting oblivious.  “And there is no cop, is there?”

“I don’t know; I was feeling like a cop there for a minute.”

“Where did you even get the siren from?” I was honestly curious about this one.  I mean, how do you just get a police siren? You can’t just buy one.

“I bought it,” he said as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.

“From who?” All of my questions were probably starting to annoy him, but I didn’t care.  I needed answers and I was going to get them.

“I know a guy,” he said mysteriously, waggling his eyebrows.  Why was he acting like this? He was so different from the time I saw him two years ago.  Sure people change over time.  They look different, they sound different, but normally no change is that noticeable.

The fact that he was able to answer my questions without actually giving me a straight answer was starting to tick me off.  Who did he think he was? Just because he moved away for a while doesn’t give him the right to start acting like a smart ass.

I threw the door open and stepped out of the car, slamming the door shut.  Before he could even blink I was in his face.  I shoved him so his back was on the car and looked at him straight on.

“Listen here, Hunter Weston.  I don’t know what’s gotten into you, but you better leave me out of it.  I don’t want you following me anymore.  I don’t want you talking to me anymore.  I don’t even want you looking at me anymore.  We dated in the past but that’s over now.  I have a boyfriend, and I’m perfectly happy with him.  Just stay out of my life,” I threatened.  I admit, I may have gone a little overboard, but it was his fault.  Why did he even have to come back?

As soon as I let my guard down, he flipped us so that my back was now on the car.  He slammed his hands around my head, trapping me there.  My face paled, and he just smirked at the reaction he got.

“No, you listen Zoey Davis.  I may have lost you once before, but I am not losing you again.  You wanted a guy with more excitement? Well now you got one, and I’m not going away anytime soon.  Don’t you see Zoey? I did this for you.  I did this for us.”

“There is no us, Hunter.  We’re over! I’m with Chad now.” His eyes darkened at my words.  His arms suddenly fell so that I wasn’t trapped anymore.

He stood there, staring at me as I climbed back into my car.  I sped off, but I still heard him shout, “I’ll do whatever it takes to win your heart Zoey!”

My heart skipped a beat when I heard those words come out of his mouth.  I couldn’t tell if I was scared or thrilled.  He changed for me.  For some reason that made my heart just melt, and that scared me.  That really, really scared me.
