Chapter Eight

Something taps on my car window, making me jump as I look at the figure staring at me with a questioning expression. Shit. I never even thought that this would happen. I clear my throat, preparing to bullshit my way through this entire awkward situation. What do I even say in a time like this? Sorry, I was just sitting outside your house, wallowing in self-pity because you were a douche to me three years ago? Like that'll work. Come on, Brittany, where is the confident bitch that has dominated almost every argument she's been in? I seriously need to grow a pair before I start acting like Sam.

I open my car door, making the figure on the other side step back into the middle of the street. Good, maybe a bus will hit him like that bus in Mean Girls hit Regina George. Unfortunately, I'm not that lucky. I take a deep breath as I step out of my car. I can do this, I got this. Finally, I look up from the pavement, meeting Josh's dark green eyes. If I didn't already know what he was capable of doing, I would fall for it all over again.

"Are you stalking me, Brittany?" Josh chuckles, crossing his arms over his chest, "Gotta admit, that'd be pretty hot."

"Actually, I was hoping to catch Jenna, I haven't really seen her since last night and she's not answering her phone," I lie.

His eyes narrow down at me. "So you aren't here to see me?"

I slowly shake my head, pretending that I have no clue what would give him that impression. "You can relax, Josh; I'm not some clingy ex-girlfriend. I'm sure that you want about as much to do with me as I want to do with you, so let's be civil about this," I suggest, surprising myself with how maturely I'm handling this. I half expected my crazy side to go ape shit on him.

"What makes you think that I don't want anything to do with you?" Josh questions.

"Sorry, I was just assuming, seeing as I want nothing to do with you," I reply, cool and collected. "Did I not make that clear last night?"

"So we can't even be friends? That's not very fair."

"Fair? You want to be friends?"

"As opposed to what other option?" he asks confused.

"Oh I don't know, us ignoring each other's existence," I propose.

"That'll be kind of hard, don't you think? I mean since I'm back and you're friends with Jenna, it just seems like we'll be seeing a lot of each other," he explains. "The last thing I want is for you to feel uncomfortable," he finishes sincerely, making me want to sincerely kick him in the balls.

That does it, I burst into laughter. "You really think we can be friends? After what you-" I stop myself before I make myself look even more pathetic than I feel. "No, Joshua, we can't be friends," I snap, opening my car door to leave. I don't know why I got out in the first place. I'm not quite sure what I expected.

Josh grasps my hand, burning my skin at his touch, making me turn to look at him. "Brittany, I didn't come out here to argue with you. I just wanted to ask you if we could talk," he stops, dropping my hand. I should've jerked it away before he had the chance. "Now everything I say is going to seem like I'm only saying it because you're acting this way."

I cock my head to the side, trying to read his face, but like usual I can't make anything out. "That's a cute line, Josh."

Josh frowns, looking at the ground. "You're a piece of work, Britt. When I actually use lines on you, you're flattered, but when I'm being honest you're completely ignorant."
