Your Name on My Soul

She wore a long yellow dress

And had red roses in her hair,

She danced with me until the night was over,

We danced until she had to say goodbye.

And I haven't seen her since that night,

When the moon went down

And the stars faded from my eyes.

Where did you go, my love,

Why have you gone away from me?

You were my sun and my moon,

My day and my night and my stars.

I have loved no one else but you

For years and years, and yet

You never sought me out or

Called out for me in your nightmares;

For I would have come, my love,

And sang you back into sleep, and

I would have forgiven you for leaving.

And when I first saw you as you truly are,

When I first realized I loved you,

And pressed your hand to my heart;

I thought you were made of shadows

And light, I thought the darkness

Was playing beautiful tricks on my tired eyes.

And didn't you love me, also,

When you said to me that night,

That though the flowers were in full bloom,

Everything was dead to you, except me?

I wish I could sing you a thousand songs, my love,

And tell you that my love for you will never die;

I will live and breathe and sleep and die

With your name on my lips and my mind and my heart and my soul.

Just to see your face, your eyes, your smile,

For only an hour, from afar, my love,

I would walk a thousand miles,

To the ends of the Earth,

I would climb the tallest mountain,

Cross the widest sea.

I would give up my last breath to you

If I knew I would die in your place.
