Chapter seven
Water is a living part of the universe. Don't mess with it.
3rd POV
After talking with his sister, Keat went to his room, thinking about everything in his present life. He remembered how he told Denny that he was from another dimension. He didn't plan to tell her anything at all, so he had to improvise at the moment... she was just a child, she believed him...
"What are you?" Was the question little Denny had asked after their mother left to work.
"I'm a boy," he replied. It was obvious.
"Then what is different about you?" she asked again. She didn't say wrong, just different. It gave him courage to continue, and it wiped away the wish to tell the entire truth... the truth might seem wrong to a little girl. wrong, not merely different.
"I'll try to explain, but try not to be scared..." Keat said, making place for her to sit. Denny sat not taking her eyes from her big brother, "You can't scare me." She said, finding it amusing and impossible.
Keat wasn't so sure about that and the fact that she was giving him love unconditionally, made him even more unsure. What if the truth will make this little strange trusting girl abandon him, turn her back on him and forget what she herself had said earlier, about siblings that stick to each other?
SO he lied. He lied smoothly, thinking the lies as he went on.
Only he did tell the truth about the basic things, he just transformed some of the facts about his life and person.
"There are other worlds than yours, little Denny." he began.
"You mean other planets? I know."
"No," he shook his head smiling kindly.
"Other dimensions. Parallel dimensions. But similar to other planets," Keat had said, trying to make it accessible for Denny.
"And you are from another dimension?" she asked.
"Yes."
"But there's nothing scary in this!" she exclaimed.
"Just have patience. As I said, these worlds, or parallel dimensions are not supposed to intersect with your world... there is a Law that prohibits the interaction of these two worlds, yours and mine. Any of the living souls that dare break the rule must be punished..."
"Like the laws in here and the police?" Denny asked. "Or like when mom says not to do something and we do it? Then we're punished..."
He laughed. She was a smart girl.
"Yeah, only a lot more serious... there are people, Keepers of the law, that chase and find the runners, those who run in your world after doing something bad there, or simply, not wanting to live there anymore... there are many reasons why someone from the other dimension decides to run here..." Keat continued his explanation, thinking of his own reasons... so different than the others.
"So the Keepers are like police and the Runners are like criminals?" Denny asked just to be sure.
"Something like that. Well I'm a Keeper. I got infiltrated in your world, so that in future I'd be able to chase down runners more effectively.... When I'll be needed, I'll have to leave to do my duty..." He said then, scared by the analogy Denny had made. If only he waited for another second, he would've heard Denny's next thought. She was thinking that the Keepers are like moms that scold their children, who are like the Runners... "But then," Denny thought, "then the runners aren't always bad, evil or even guilty... sometimes they just want to eat the strawberry gem at night... like I do!"
But Keat jumped too fast to the conclusion that if he had told her the truth she would've rejected him. And he was wrong. Denny, however didn't have time to continue speculating on that subject because Keat's affirmation that he might leave suddenly worried her :
"So in one day, you will... leave me?" she asked, her eyes big with fear.
Since then, that was Denny's greatest and constant fear.
Coming home, Blake collapsed in his bed, looking through the documents he had stolen from the archives in the school. Then he made copies and put the originals back. Especially for Cathy.
He felt how everything was just falling from his hands, his head wasn't working right. he wasn't sure if he was able to deal with this. He couldn't understand why this Runner mattered so much to Dorian. This was a dilemma for him. Dorian was like obsessed with finding him. His initial name was Raidan, but it was obvious that he changed it. This Raidan had come to Earth when he was a kid. Dorian hadn't explained anything, the motives, personal ones, obviously, remained a secret for Blake. However, Dorian had a gift himself, he could tell where the runners are ... but his gift was unpredictable and he couldn't control it... it was more like the opposite. But it was concrete. And it showed that the Runner was here. Dorian said that the runner, Raidan, had a talent, he had the fascicules of white light in his body and he could emanate it when scared or sick and on purpose too... and it could kill people if it was aimed to that. Dorian told Blake to be careful. Blake was nineteen, and he had to act that he's two years younger. Because that was the approximate age of the Runner.
