Evan and I spent that entire month together. We went to the movies, had picnics, went swimming, had dinner at fancy restaurants, and just all around goofed off until May. The day before he left we had a romantic dinner under the stars. It was a beautiful night. The stars and the moon were shining so brightly it was as if they knew it was our last night together. We were lying on our backs staring at the sky when Evan rolled onto his side and leaned on his elbow facing me. I turned my head to look at him and he was just smiling.
"What?" I asked "I got something for you." "What!" I repeated this time out of a bit of shock. But before I could say anything else he was sliding a box out of his jacket pocket. He handed it too me and I looked at it in awe. It was small and blue with an orange bow on top. I lifted the lid to find another box, but this one was different. It was black velvet, like the jewelry boxes you get form those expensive jewelry stores. I ran my fingers over the soft surface and lifted the lid carefully. I gasped... Out of the corner of my eye I could Evan grinning at my reaction. "Do you like it?" I reached in the box and pulled out one of the most beautiful and unique necklaces I've ever seen. It was a small, pear shaped, onyx colored stone with thin diamond vines entwined around it. "Oh.my.gosh. Evan this is beautiful!" I was speechless and he gently took the necklace from my hands moved behind me, and hooked it around my neck. "Thank you!" I said, still barely breathing and barely able to form words. He was still flashing me that brilliant smile. "Good. I'm glad." "Wow Evan. This night has been amazing. Why does it have to end?" "I don't know. I don't want it to end either. I will hate my parents for this for a long time." We started getting up and packing everything back up. We got into the car and before he turned the car on he leaned over the center console and kissed me. Our last kiss. If his parents saw us kissing he knew he'd be dead. Yea, his parents hated me that much. We parted but he held my hand the whole way home. The next morning I decided to go over to the Calloway's to see if I could help with anything. Their house was ridiculously huge for only four people to live in and the door itself was made of enough wood the make my whole room. I knocked (the approved) three times and waited for Mrs. Calloway to open the door. "Good morning Mrs. Calloway. Is Evan home?" "Yes," she said sternly. "He's up in his room packing." She's irritating. "May I go and see him?" see! I remembered to say 'May I'! "Yes." She widened to door to let me through. I walked through the foyer and made my way up to the huge marble, winding staircase. Evan's door was cracked open a little bit and I could hear Evan moving around and drawers opening and closing. I pushed the door open and he turned to face me. He dropped the stack of clothes in his hands and walked over and hugged me. "I was afraid I wouldn't be able to say good-bye to you." I told him. "That could never happen." "So I see you're almost ready to go." "I guess so." He slammed the suitcase shut behind him, still not letting go of me. "Is there anything I can help with?" "Yes." "What?" "Don't let me leave," I started crying into his shoulder again. And from the shaking of his body I was guessing he was too. Eventually we got all of his things downstairs and to his car, where his parents were waiting. For him at least, and I hated how they acted like I wasn't there and nothing was wrong with what was happening. "Do you have everything you need?" his mother asked, still not even glancing in my direction. Evan looked at me and then back at her. "No. just everything you'll let me have." the anger bit harshly in his voice. I love this boy, this was the first time id ever seen him get mad at his parents right to their faces, and it was over me! He is so great! His mother sighed and looked to her husband, who nodded for Evan to get in the car. He opened the door and climbed in. he out his hands on the steering wheel and just sat there, motionless. Walked over to his side and leaned in the window. "Ill miss you." I told him. "I miss you already." He kissed me lightly on the lips before his dad cut in and broke us up by clearing his throat a little too loudly. "Don't want to miss your flight by hitting traffic now do you?" again, not looking at me. "I guess not." Evan started the car and began to pull away. He drove slowly at first keeping sight of me on the rearview mirror, and then he looked ahead at the open, traffic-less, road and sped off. *****
