Dead Embers [Chapter Uno] .The Beginning && The Past.

3

Memo: This whole story is mine, I wrote this chapter somewhere between sixth months and a year ago. There is a little more written, but if I get enough hits on this, I'll continue it. THERE IS A FLASHBACK IN IT! It starts at the ellipses and ends at the second one. It was italicized, but I don't know how to do that here.

Two girls crowded around something hidden in the middle of the bushes. A strange look was equally visible on each of their faces and could lead anyone who walked past right into their emotions. The shorter girl's mouth was forced into a scowl and the anger on her face was apparent to all.

"It's like they didn't care who saw her. They just left her here lying out practically in the open." She said, the scowl becoming more and more noticeable.

"Sofia, people who do these things tend to not think about decency," said the taller, less voluptuous girl next to her.

"She's naked, Dahlia. She's completely naked and the way they positioned her ... It was just deliberate. It's obvious."

"Sofia, don't get any ideas. You know we need to lay low for a while."

"And whose fault was that?" She snapped. "Not mine, so you better not even go there again. I'm tired of you all looking at me like I'm the problem."

"You were the only one of us out that night who didn't come back and the only one without an explanation. You just disappeared without a warning," Leah said, an obvious accusation in her voice as Sofia's eyes slightly glazed over with the memory.
...

The moon shown through the only window in the room and though it was full and bright, only some light seeped in. The window was rather small and only the smallest of children could squeeze through, but, somehow, she managed to maneuver herself out of it. Some of the girls were still asleep in their respective rooms and the rest were gone and had vanished for the night.

Sofia was usually the one to drift from time to time. Each of them took their breaks from the group, but Sofia most often of all and often without notice. Alone time was precious to her and even though she separated herself from the others, she still felt surrounded by people. Tonight though, she wasn't leaving alone.

She had met someone; someone like them. Someone new; who understood her; who she could talk to. Someone unknown to the rest of them .This time, a companion was what Sofia was looking for and it seemed as though she had found one.

After sneaking out of the house, she walked up the long driveway to the road. Cutting through the forest would be much quicker, but she knew they'd send [someone] to track her and her footsteps would be easier to track than her scent.

Almost nothing could stop her now as she continued to move at the quick speed that was gifted to her. Of course, she was slower than the rest, but she had a head start and it would take days for them to find her.

She met up with him at the gate by the lake where they first met. When she saw him, her pace slowed, but her heart beat faster. He turned around before she reached him and though she was in the shadows, he looked right at her. His eyes were just as bright as the moon and the color, like the day sky; almost a paradox, but I suppose that is what she was most drawn to.

"Sofia," he said, an accent thick on his tongue, "I've been waiting."

...
"I shouldn't have to explain myself to you guys." She said as took her jacket off and knelt down, covering the frozen body in the bushes. "We need to take her somewhere where no one will find her. It will lead them to us and that is something that we can't afford."

Using her legs, she lifted the small, seemingly weightless girl off the ground and turned around to walk away. Looking back, she called, "Are you coming or what?"
