This should have been up earlier but things kept popping up before I could write the last bit. Anyways, I hope that you enjoy it....

Part 41...

********

The Silent Treatment.

The oh so subtle way of somebody letting you know that they are majorly peed off with you.

My mother had been giving me the silent treatment ever since our argument, the night before last.

She was in the kitchen making iced tea and I went in before I left for school. As much as I was annoyed with her, I wanted her to talk to me again and let me know that things between us would be alright.

"It's the big cheer off tonight mum" I told her, forcing a smile.

She continued to make her drink, pausing to tuck her platinum blonde hair behind her ear - it was as if she hadn't heard a word that I had said.

"I'm going to try my best" I promised, knowing that my being captain meant a lot to her as well, even if she was not willing to admit it at the moment.

I watched her hopefully, wanting some form of response.

I didn't get one.

"So, I guess I'll see you tonight" I said sadly, picking up my gym bag and heading towards the door.

Missile Max was waiting by the front door for me; he usually caught the school bus, but I'd promised him that I would give him a lift today.

"Mama told me not to waste my life, she said spread your wings my little butterfly…." we both sang along to Little Mix on the way to school.

Max clearly inherited his super-coolness from his big sister.

I continued blasting out the chorus when the volume was turned down.

"What's up?" I asked a sheepish looking Max.

"Kaydie, what's wrong with mum?" he asked softly, his blue eyes as wide as saucers.

The truth was I didn't even know.

But I knew something wasn't right and obviously Max knew too.

He was far too young to carry this kind of burden.

"You don't need to worry about it buddy, mum's gonna be fine" I told him, reaching across and fluffing up his hair, "I'm going to talk to dad about it though and he'll make everything better"

I hoped.

How could he not see that the woman he was married to had changed so drastically recently?
