A portable application or software is a piece of software that can be installed in any form of portable media like a USB flash drive , CD-ROM, DVD, external hard disc etc. To be qualified as a portable software it must store all its data including its configuration on the portable device and n=must not leave behind any data on the computer.

Even though these portable applications can be installed on any pen drives, a low memory pendrive like 256/512 MB can be filled with portable software and be used entirely as a carry along device full of all the software you will ever need.

i have compiled a list of applications that i just need on any computer i use and you can find these softwares for free. just search on any search engine with the name of the software with keyword 'portable'.

1. Portable Messengers : the all-in-one messenger is i've found very useful on a work computer or my school computer. There are sev
eral options available on the net of different messengers.

2. Portable VLC media player: a media player that is compact and capable of running most formats of audio and video.

3. Portable Firefox is a must have software because even though it is the most popular browser it is almost never installed in a work/school computer.

4. Portable GIMP is a free image editor as an alternative to photoshop.

5. Portable 7-zip : because not being able to extract .rar files when you need them can be very frustrating.

6. Portable utorrent: you can find torrent files of almost any thing you want so a portable torrent downloader can be alife saver.

7. Restoration: a small portable application that retrieves any deleted file. No not just from the recycle bin but from beyond. It has saved my life more times than i can mention.

8. TinyResMeter: weighing less than less than 200kb this little tool can get you information on any system resources in realtime.
