I hustled out of the girl's locker room onto the baseball diamond....yes I said baseball diamond. And yes I'm a girl and I'm not going there to cheer anyone on. I'm there to play. My name is Leah and my twin brother Luke and I go to West Crestfield High School. We're feturnel twins.
Today was game day. We had four more games to go then we'd be in the State Champs. As I walked by the opposing team (since it's baseball they were all boys) I got a few whistles and "Hey hun why are you here, did you miss your bus to the softball game?" I always get those comments so I just shook them off. I wouldn't say that I'm a tomboy or anything..it's just that it's weird. Why do I play on the baseball team you ask? Well the school made an exception because I was the best player they've ever had. My mom doesn't approve that I play on the baseball team even though I'm better at baseball than softball. So my mom has me do softball on the side too. But trust me, they treat me just like one of the boys. I run the bases like all of the boys and I play as hard as the boys.
I hurried and sprinted towards the dugout just when my coach was telling us to go take positions. I'm short stop so it's all good. As I walked on the field I saw the other team complaining to their coaches about having a girl on the baseball team but once they saw me throw to first they shut up..right away. The ball zoomed right into Luke's glove. He happens to be first base. As the ump called, "PLAY BALL!" I got into the infield position and got more whistles. What pigs I thought to myself. Luckily the batter hit the ball right at me and I caught it. 1 out I thought. The rest of the inning went by just as fast. No runs at all. Now it was our turn to bat and I was 4th batter cause I hit home runs. Of course the guys before me got on base so it was my turn. As I got into the batter's box the catcher whispered something to me.
"I'll try to go easy of you" he said.
"Don't worry I won't need you to" I replied with pure satisfaction.
The pitcher whipped the ball my way. I swung the bat and sure enough...a home run. I could see all of the boys on the other team groan and yell. But my team was jumping and cheering as all four of us crossed home plate. As I picked up my bat the catcher came up to me and just simply said..
"You got lucky this time"
I just simply stated.."Yes and you'll be saying that the next 16 times I get homers huh smart one?"
He looked at me in shock. Had I really just said that!?!? Yep I did and I was proud of myself.
The rest of the game was awesome. Of course we won. 21 to 0. We lined up to shake hands with the other team and I stood right behind Luke. I was also right in front of our coach just in case one of the boys tried anything smart. Not like they would cause I know karate. (I'm a black belt.) The last person to shake hands with me was the catcher. He smirked as I approched him. His hand was already cupped and it looked like something was in there. As we shook hands, sure enough he had put his number on a piece of paper and slide it into my hand. I just simply gave it to Luke while the catcher was looking at me and said, "Here Luke add it to the pile" Luke took out a huge bag with boys' numbers that they had given me over time. The catchers mouth dropped to the floor. He must have been embarrassed cause all of his team mates laughed at him when they saw this. I helped put away the equipment and ran to the locker room. I had to change into my softball jersey. I came out just as the other team was loading the bus.
I had smacked right into none other than the catcher.
"Well well well" he said. 'If it isn't the star player. You did pretty good out there for a girl. And I see that you ARE part of the softball team..how cute!"
"Um thanks" I retorted a little frustrated at his last comment.
He got up and offered his hand so he could help me up. I declined and then stormed off. I passed Luke and told him that I had to go to softball. He just said good luck and that he would tell the coach. I kissed his cheek and dashed off to my car.
The catcher had seen me kiss Luke and walked up to him.
"Hey dude that your girlfriend?"
"Nope just my sister." He simply stated with a laugh.
"Oh could you try giving her my number again?"
