An Unexpected Twist

Chapter 2:

I let out a frustrated sigh when I rounded a corner and found myself facing yet another dead end. The school seemed to be filled with them, since I've been walking into them one after another. I was getting really tired of it, especially because I was starting to feel like a mouse stuck in a maze, scampering around aimlessly for a way out.
With a low growl I crumpled up the map of the school and threw it against the offending wall, my excitement for my first day at school had suddenly disappeared.
Turning around, I surveyed the other three passages with my hands on my hips, looking for a classroom so that I could ask for directions. I had to get over my shyness if I wanted to get to class before the period was over.
With a quick decision I turned right and made my way determinedly down it, my hair swinging around my legs with every step I took.
I hadn't even taken ten steps when the sound of a soft terrified whimpers and male laughter reached my ears.
My steps automatically slowed and became soft on the floors as I intently listened for where the sound was coming from. I walked a bit further and glanced around the next corner just as a girl with long flowing blond hair, wearing one of the maid outfits that all the human girls I had seen wore, suddenly appeared a few feet in front of me out of a darkened alcove. Her clothes hung around her slender figure in tatters and blood flowed out of the small cuts on her face and neck.
A lean, slightly muscular glowing pale boy with brown hair appeared in front of her, blocking her escape with an evil smirk on his perfect lips.
Terror transformed her soft face just as he drew back his fist and hit her on the side of her face. Blood splattered on the wall as she stumbled back into the alcove where she had appeared from, the dark haired boy followed lazily behind her, licking the blood from his knuckles as if it was candy.
My anger started burning up inside my and small sparks of fire surrounded me in a wide circle. I pressed my hands into tight fists as I tried to control the rise of power that demanded to be released along with my anger. My chest quickly rose and fell at the past pace of my breathing while my eyes burned like small multicoloured flames.
So many memories of pain, terror and sadness arose from the dark corner I had shoved them into. Memories of my life along time ago that I had hoped to put behind me and never relive again but that girl, with her beaten bloodied body, had brought them all rushing back. They crashed into me with such ferocity of being ignored for so long that I couldn't help but wince.
Another feminine cry of pain rang out throughout the passages towards me and my control snapped.
Dropping my file and my bag simultaneously, I used that unnatural speed I had and ran into the alcove, fire licking at my heels and giving light to the darkness as I stopped at the entrance and took in the scene in front of me with anger and loathing.
There were three vampires. The one with the dark brown hair, that I had seen moments before, was leaning casually against the wall. His blue-green eyes were watching the other two with something close to pride before snapping to me with surprise.
The other two looked exactly alike with short black hair, wide hazel eyes and slender figures. They had two human girls pinned underneath them, their clothes so torn that their bodies were completely exposed. Their eyes shone with hope as soon as the saw me.
I moved the same instant they rushed me as one. Ducking and twisting my way out of their reaching hands and positioned myself between them and two girls who quickly covered themselves. I watched the three vampires as the girls pressed themselves against me, cowering away from their tormentors.
"Back off, assholes." I said in a low controlled voice when the shifted slightly towards us. They paused, looked me up and down mockingly before they laughed disbelievingly.
The flaming circle around me burned brighter, making the girls press closer to me. I hated being underestimated because of my size.
"I don't think we will. You see, you've got our lunch hiding behind you little girl." One of the twins said as he licked his lips, his hungry gaze fixed on the trembling girls behind me.
Furious, I slapped him with a quick yet powerful slash of the power that was building up inside me, demanding to be released. I think I overestimated the amount because as soon as that wave of power hit him, he was flung back against the wall. The smell of burnt flesh hung in the air.
