Harry Potter and the Secret Power
I do not own any of the Harry Potter universe. No money is changing hands.
A/N; This story is unfinished, please review it! I'd love some feedback on Cara!

Chapter 1
Number 9

It was midnight, on Wednesday, July nineteenth, and a young girl was unpacking her things in her new home, Number 9, Privet Drive, Surrey. She had just opened her box of schoolbooks, and glanced out the window to see a strange sight. A young man was walking past. She thought it quite odd that someone would take a walk at midnight, on a Wednesday. She walked closer to her new bedrooms window, and looked closer at the strange young man. He had jet black hair and glasses, a scrawny body, and looked a bit upset.

Harry Potter had just had a nightmare in which Voldemort killed Ron and Hermione while he, Harry, watched helpless from his position tied to the statue in the graveyard that Voldemort resurrected himself in. He took a deep breath and paused in front of the house that had recently been sold. He glanced at it, wondering who had moved in, when he saw a young girl staring at him through an upstairs window. She had dark brown hair, a heart shaped face, and what looked like dark green eyes. From that distance, he really couldn't be sure. She was shapely, but not overly so. Harry smiled and waved halfheartedly, and the girl blushed furiously.

"Cara, why aren't you in bed?"

The young girl jumped slightly, and spun around quickly. She saw her mother standing in the doorway.

"Um, well, I haven't found my bed sheets yet."

"So you looked in your school box? Here; this is your box of sheets. Make your bed and get some rest. We have a big day tomorrow."

Cara took the box of sheets and set it at her feet. She glanced back out the window, but the boy was gone.

Harry was asleep, with blessedly sweet dreams, when his cousin, Dudley Dursley barged into his room and told him his aunt Petunia wanted him to make breakfast. Harry was so startled he fell out of his bed onto the floor. Dudley snickered and left.

Harry reached for his glasses and rubbed the sleep from his eyes. He had had a wonderful dream, but he couldn't remember anything about it. Harry silently cursed at his lack of memory, and dug around for some clothes.

A few minutes later, he was in the kitchen cooking breakfast for his aunt Petunia and uncle Vernon. Dudley had left for summer school already. Dudley had gotten a failing grade in his math class and was sent to summer school to fix it. When he came home, he was always angry or frustrated, and roughed up Harry.

Harry served the bacon, eggs, and toast he had made and helped himself to a small serving of each before going outside for a short walk. He wanted to see that girl again.

Cara had just finished her cereal when she decided to wander around her new home for a bit. She hadn't seen it all yet. She was in the living room when a barn owl swooped in the window and held its leg out to her. She untied the ribbon and saw the Hogwarts crest stamped on the letter.

Harry was just outside number 9 when he saw the girl holding a Hogwarts letter. So she's a witch, Harry thought. I would like to talk to her. He walked up to the door and knocked three times. The girl answered a few seconds later, still holding her letter. The barn owl was gone. Her eyes traveled to his face, where she gasped as she saw his scar.

"What happened to you?" she said with an American accent.

"I was cursed," Harry replied, "And this little bugger of a scar is the result."

Harry was surprised she didn't know his story.

"I saw you walking around last night, you know. Why were you doing that?"

"Erm... I dunno. What's your name by the way? I'm Harry Potter."

"Oh! Where are my manners! I'm Cara Greene. Nice to meet you."

"Well Cara, I see you're going to Hogwarts. What year are you in?"

Cara quickly hid the letter behind her back and blushed.

"Sixth, and yeah, I am."

Harry could tell she was uncomfortable and decided to go. "Well I've got to go, but ill see you around ok?"

"Ok.".

The rest of the summer passed quickly for them both. Before they knew it, they were in Diagon Alley buying their supplies. Harry bumped into her at Gringotts, and introduced her to the Weasleys.
