Emily pushed herself through the brush, and kneeled behind a bush. She frowned as she peered through the leaves and at the ship. “Another one. Damn it! There are more and more every day.” She whispered to herself.

“Another?!” Emily turned around and glared at Mikey who was leaning against a tree with sweat pouring down his face. Logan, her brother, was also glaring at Mikey, who just so happened to be his best friend. Logan had known Mikey since 8th grade. They used to be inseparable. But over the past year, Mikey was more of an annoying burden, than a friend. But, Logan felt like it was his duty to stick to his side. The fact that Mikey had a crush on Emily didn’t help that though.

“You really got to learn to be quiet, Mikey. How many times do I have to say that?” Logan could tell that Emily’s tolerance of Mikey was long gone. It wasn’t a secret that Emily didn’t feel the same way about Mikey as he did about her. Logan wasn’t complaining though. He never wanted his sister to date his best friend. She deserved better and he knew it.

“What else do you see, Emily?”  Logan asked her as he sat down next to his friend. Sydney, Emily’s friend just stood there with her hands on her knees, trying to catch her breath.

“Just a bunch of those E.T.s getting of that ship. Going off in groups, as usual. It all seems norm…” Emily paused and did a double take. “Wait a minute…there are a couple that are going off by themselves. Have you ever seen that before?” Emily turned to face her brother. He just looked back at her in confusion.

“No. They always stick together. Remember that one that we caught by himself? He was freaking out and crying about how he never should have left his group.” Logan recalled, “Out of all his babbling, the one thing I remember him saying is, ‘you never leave the group. Never leave the group.’ Then again, the guy seemed crazy.”

“Yeah well…there are several who went off by themselves.” Emily sighed as she sat down, facing her group. “I guess…they aren’t as worried now that there are so few of us.” She rationalized. She looked at her older brother for support and he just nodded his head.

“This is crazy.” Sydney breathed, “Why can’t they just leave us alone? They’ve wiped out enough of us!” Sydney’s British accent sang through her voice. It’s funny how the whole school year as a senior; she tried to hide her accent from everyone, not wanting anyone to know that she was ‘foreign’. She claimed that she never knew who to trust when everyone was being her best friend because she was from England. She also said that boys were like flies when they heard there was a foreign girl around.

Yet now, after the invasion, her accent came back as strong as ever, shocking Logan and Mikey. Emily was the only one who had known.

“I know. It seems like they will never give up.” Logan whispered. He looked at his sister, wishing that none of this had ever happened. He hated seeing her grow up so fast. She was only 17 and suddenly she had to take care of herself. He did the best he could to take care of her, but she caught on to life fast, knowing that to survive, you had to think of yourself. Logan watched his little sister go from a shy, innocent teenage girl, crazy about boys, to a fully grown woman, harder than his bitch of an ex-girlfriend. He hated it, but at the same time, he was proud of her. She led them better than he ever could have, although he tried in the beginning.
