Inspiration - Music

One of the things I find most maddening about books is that they don't come with soundtracks. I always want to include a mixtape with every one of my books and instructions that say, "Listen to this song for this chapter." And that's never been more true with the Watersong series, which is so tied to music.

I've mentioned it before, and I'm sure I'll mention it again, that I listend to a lot of Florence + Machine while writing this series, particuarly the song "Never Let Me Go." I feel like it fits Gemma perfectly.

In Chapter 23, when Gemma is preparing to leave, I pictured the song "Greater Than Consequence" by Amos the Transparent playing in the background. It captures Gemma and her situation so well.

I think the sirens themselves were partially inspired by Ke$ha, particuarly the song "Cannibal."

There's a song tha tthe sirens sing through out the series, and one of the greatest things about the audio version of the books is that they can incorproate the music. I wish there was a way that I could include that siren's song in every version of the book, but there isn't one. (Maybe in the future they can have books like those Hallmark cards that play music, so you open the cover and hear the song).

What are songs that you thought of when you reading Wake? Do you listen to music when you read, or do you find it distracting?
