Chapter 18

Amy smoothed over her hair and pushed it over her shoulder. She wasn’t used to having it hang out of a clean ponytail but today, she’d opted to leave it down anyways. She swept her hands through it a few times and then twisted it around, hoping that it would just stay in a curl at the side and not fall around her head instead.

She seriously wished that she had an elastic band to put her hair up with.

“You should just leave it,” Mel stage whispered to me, knowing that everyone there could hear, “I know that when I don’t wash my hair for a few days, it gets really gross too.”

Amy shot her a glance and dropped her head, trying to hide the tears that stung her eyes. Chris’s new girlfriend had been making fun of her for the past hour, ever since the whole group had decided to hang out at the mall. She couldn’t take it anymore. Melissa was being so cruel.

She darted her glances around the hall, trying to focus on something other than the sharp words that assaulted her every minute or so. There were a few people, but most had left when they’d come in. After all, they were a bunch of kids who were sure to be noisy and obnoxious. Other than that though, there wasn’t much to distract her from Chris’s girlfriend.

Amy didn’t even understand what she’d done to make enemies with Melissa. She’d greeted her kindly; she hadn’t stared or rolled her eyes or anything – although now she wished she had. Amy wished she’d stood her ground because maybe then, Melissa wouldn’t have been as mean as she was being now.

“I...I just washed it this morning,” she said defensively, curling her hands around themselves.

Mel shrugged, “Whatever.” She looked back at Chris, and kissed his cheek, sliding her hand into his back pocket. Her beady eyes poked back at Amy only for a second and she rolled her eyes, “Stare much?”

Amy bowed her head in apology and shuffled quickly over to where Julie and her boyfriend, David, were standing and talking.

“Hey, Ames,” David said with a goofy smile, keeping his eyes on Julie. If Amy was asked who would be the only two people in her grade still together after ten years, she would have said them. There was no question that they were in love.

She gave a tiny smile and then came to stand in front of them, “Hey,” she said through a gulp, blinking slightly and raising her head. Amy felt so self-conscious though. Melissa had been thorough with finding all of Amy’s flaws within the hour and even managed to discover and abuse some of faults that she didn’t even know she had.

Julie peeked over at her and her smile immediately dropped, “Is everything okay?” she asked, looking over Amy and analyzing every inch of her.
