Chapter Fifteen

"You have got to be kidding me." the man mumbled. He had climbed out of the grave and was staring down at the pile of metal. The body was still wholly intact, but my father's face was no longer there, it had been eaten away by bugs.

I felt sick to my stomach. I crouched down on the ground and threw up. The man held my hair back for me, while I gagged so much that tears poured out of my eyes. I can't believe this is happening to me. My father was a robot!

"What does this make me?" I thought out loud.

"I don't know. But I do know what else it means."

I could feel his hard gaze on me and felt as if he was about to deliver some more bad news. I wiped my mouth with the back of my hand and sat back to look at him.

"Well don't just stare at me. What is it?" I snapped.

"This means that you can probably get pregnant by me. If your father had children, then obviously all robots can. It would make sense since we used to be human."

"Great. Now I have to fight the world while worrying about a baby. My life really sucks. If there is a God out there he must really hate me." I groaned. "Why can't things ever go my way?"

I started to sob uncontrollably, and the blonde haired man just gathered me up into his arms and rocked me back and forth while whispering soothing words into my ear. The weight on my shoulders was steadily increasing and I didn't know how much more I could take before my legs buckled beneath me.

The sun was setting, casting a shadowy haze over the grave and I stared at my father's headstone, wishing he was here to guide me. He would know what to do. Through my teary gaze I saw a metallic head pop up above the grave, red eyes staring straight at me. I screamed and scrambled out of the man's arms and onto my feet, all while pointing a shaking finger at the skinless robot emerging from my father's grave.

The robot's joints creaked against the rust caked on them, and he seemed to stretch languidly, bending back like my father used to do after a hard day of work out in the fields.

"Must you scream like that, Sophie? You know I have sensitive hearing." the creepy robot said.

He sounded exactly like my father, but I couldn't quite connect the two together without the face attached. All I could see was metal and two red glowing eyes. The blonde haired man pushed me behind him and took a protective stance.

The faceless robot seemed to roll his eyes, letting out a loud scoff. "You don't need to protect her from her own father, young man. I've no intention to hurt my daughter."

I couldn't believe this. My heart was pounding in my chest and my breaths were coming in short, harsh gasps. I was going to pass out if I didn't calm down but seeing your father rise from the grave is one thing. Seeing him rise from the grave as a robot is a whole different ball game.

I squeezed my eyes shut, half hoping that I was dreaming. When I opened my eyes everything was the same, so I squeezed my eyes shut again. Wasn't I just wishing my father were here not even five minutes ago? Now he's here and I want him gone! Okay, so he isn't quite as I remember him when I was a kid, but he's still the same man, just not as...meaty.

"Is it really you?" I called out.

He folded his arms across his chest. "Of course it's me. I just crawled out of my grave, what more proof do you need?"

I let out a sob as I recognized his dry humour and ran out to him. It was a little weird giving him a hug but it felt good none the less.

"I missed you." I whispered.

He kissed my forehead with his cold, metal lips and gave me a squeeze. "I missed you too. You have to fill me in on everything that's been going on."

I gave a short laugh. "There's a lot you missed. For one I might be pregnant."

"Wonderful." he replied sarcastically. "It isn't the best starting point, but hey, you've got to start somewhere I guess."

"I'm being held captive by the leader. I've lost my memory."

My dad sighed and patted my back gently before letting me go to turn to the blonde haired man.

"Perhaps you'd better fill me in then, eh?"

---------------------------

To my disappointment, I had to leave my father and the other man in order to get back to my cell before dark. I checked my pocket for my Swiss Army knife and heaved a sigh of relief when I found it still safely secured in my pocket. Mr. Poke was waiting for me in the foyer. I looked down at my fingers to see my nails caked in dirt and grime, and my clothes pretty much the same. I shrugged, coming up with an easy enough explanation in case he happened to ask me about my dirty apparel.

As soon as I stepped in the house, the front lights turned out, signalling to everybody that it was dark and time to lock themselves up in their houses.

"Just in time." Mr. Poke observed. "I have some good news for you. While you were gone, I've set our wedding date. It will take place in five days. Just don't show up as you are now." He sneered at me before walking off. When his back was turned to me I stuck my tongue out at him while giving him the finger.

"Now that isn't very nice." Derik mused from behind me.

I swung around to give him a glare but he seemed unperturbed by it. He unfolded himself from the wall and sauntered over to me with a sick grin on his face. I just imagined poking his eyes out so I was able to smile back at him.

"Congratulations on the wedding. I'm sure Mr. Poke will have fun with you."

Too bad he won't get the chance. Now that the wedding is scheduled, I have a deadline to get out of here. It'll make it easier in a way for me to do what I have to do. If I don't cut off some heads, so to speak, mine will soon be rolling on the floor. When the man visits tonight I'll have to tell him my plan. It's really not that complicated. Raid the weapons room, let some bullets fly, and high-tail it out of here.

"It's getting late. I think I'll go to bed." I said.

"I'll accompany you."

He folded his hands behind his back and walked at a leisurely pace beside me all the way down to my cell. I stuffed my hands in my pockets and felt the hard, metal handle of the knife. It was just me and Derik alone in a room. If I was fast enough I could kill him and run outside. There were no guards outside my room or upstairs from what I could see. My hands shook with adrenaline as I enclosed my fist around the knife, but Derik had his eyes on me and I knew he was much stronger and faster. I released the knife in my pocket and the muscles relaxed in my body.

"Good night, Sophie. Sleep tight." he grinned.

The steel door shut behind him and the locks clicked into place. I fell back on my bed with a huff, as black dots swarmed across my vision. I could feel the blood in my veins rushing. I needed to wait up for the man since he said he would be back tonight. Maybe my father will come with him.

I wasn't tired at all but when I closed my eyes briefly, a flash of a memory flitted across my mind. It wasn't of me and him in the woods anymore, of me and him making love...it was something different. I spotted him in the corner of my living room, standing there dark and solitary. Wendy was with us. The conversation we had played in my head, fuzzy but audible.

"What name would you like? It's your choice."

His golden eyebrows raised the slightest bit as his brown eyes looked down at me for the third time in ten minutes. I nearly sighed in content but I coughed it out and looked at his forehead.

"Damien." he said after a moment. His glance slid to a book on my coffee table. "Damien Maverek."

"Damien. Damien Maverek." I sighed out loud. "My robot slave." I stopped, not quite liking the sound of that. "No. Damien Maverek....my robot love."
