Chapter 4: Linguine and Luke the Meanie

"Emma, I don't think I can do this anymore. I can't just pretend to like them."

"So don't pretend!" she chirped, ignoring my glare.

"That's the stupidest idea I've ever heard."

"Okay, but it'll be fun. Think of it as a senior project."

"But our senior projects are for charity."

"And I can be the charity case!"

"You're weird, Emma."

"And you have an admirer coming your way."

I was about to ask her what she was talking about, but Emma not-so-subtly pointed to a figure behind me. I turned around and saw Ian leaning against the locker casually.

"Can I help you?" I asked, being unnecessarily rude.

"I'm just here to walk you to class."

"You don't have to."

"I want to."

"I don't want you to."

"Fine, be that way."

I expected him to walk away or something, but he didn't. He just stood there calmly, making no move to leave. I did my best to ignore him, but his presence was just nagging me. "Aren't you going to leave?"

"No, I'm good right here."

"Just go, Ian," I gritted through clenched teeth.

"You don't own this spot."

I gave up and stormed away, shooting an apologetic glance at Emma. She nodded understandingly and went to her next class. Annoyingly, Ian caught up to me, even when I was speed walking away from him.

"You're a slow walker, you know that, kitten?"

"Then speed up. And don't call me kitten!"

"What do you have against cats?"

"Nothing, except I don't like being called a baby one."

"So you want to be an old cat?"

"NO! Don't you have a class to be getting to?"

"We're going to the same place, Kitty."

Facepalm moment. I forgot that we had Literature together. I didn't reply back to him, going as fast as my feet could carry me to the other side of the school without looking like a total idiot. Ian, on the other hand, looked like he was just going for a stroll in the park. He had longer legs than me, which wasn't fair at all.

"So how about lunch?"

"It's in between breakfast and dinner."

"Okay, how about lunch with me?"

"It's between never and in your dreams."

"It's off campus," he sang, like I would suddenly change my mind because it got me off school grounds.

"I don't care. Leave me alone."

I just had to go to the end of the hallway and I was saved from Ian. Ignoring my requests, he yammered on. "Come to lunch with me."
