Chapter 19

With arms stretched out my father walked up to me to embrace me in a gentle hug. Wool who stood beside me was pushed aside with a face of discouragement.

“My dearest Domina! How I have missed you!” He said before lowering his stare to my large midsection. He rested his right hand right on my belly, as if checking for kicks.

“To believe I’m to become a grandpa… You make me so proud!” Then he hugged me again. It felt a bit strange to hear someone tell you that you’ve done a good job, when the subject is getting pregnant. I had to bit my tongue not to tell him that it’s the mere result of a hell of a lot of humping, if anything. Instead I smiled and kissed his cheek.

“Hello father, it’s nice to see you too.” and btw, thanks for marrying me off and then not come see me! But I did not say this. “Have you talked to Brett?” I asked instead. He sighed and suddenly looked tired.

“Yes I heard about what happened, such a mess… I am truly sorry, Domina. I would not think that of him, and no, I have not talked to him yet. But you can rest assure that I’ll punish him greatly-”

“No!” I interrupted “Please don’t do that…things have changed in a way that eliminates all reason for any punishing to take place.” He looked at me surprised, and I asked him to come join me for a cup of tea so that I could explain the situation…and then I mean everything; Brett, the poisonings, the Damned Ones, Daisy and my suspicions. In the meantime Wool sat outside like a sulking child, not wanting to join us (and by the looks of it, my father did not approve of Wools presence at all).

My father listened patiently and asked only one or two questions as I went on.

“So,” my father asked “you have the possibly catastrophic situation with the supposedly reproducing Damned Ones, as well as a traitor among you who is out for the killing of…well you?” he did not look me in the eyes as he said it. My father was not known for showing emotions, but I saw the small signs that at this point were his avoidance of eye contact and his discrete fingering with his teacup. I answered with a nod and took a deep breath.

“I am so sorry, Domina. It’s not supposed to be this hard, and I deeply regret not checking up on you. I thought it was best for both you and Brett to keep a curtain distance for a time, but now I see that it was the wrong way to go.”

“We can’t tell how things would’ve turned out if we had chosen differently,” I said “and if there is anything that I have learned so far, it’s that you don’t gain anything by looking back and wondering. But I do regret it took me this long to see it…”

“But you are…happy here? Alpha Donovan is treating you well?” Father asked.

I smiled “Trust me on this, father…I haven’t gone easy on him and would never accept anything but being treated as an equal. It has taken time and we are still learning, but also believe me when I tell you that I do love him and the family we are creating. It’s hard, especially now, but yes…I am happy.”

This brought a smile to his face and he took my hands in his.

“Ehm, Luna?” it was Wool’s voice from just outside the room. “All the summoned packs have arrived, or you know if you don’t count Brett…but he is already here. Still in…you know…“ his words silenced into a mere mumble and I spotted the irritated twitches in my father’s face. I was quick to answer Wool before my father’s temper could rise further.
