17.

Katia pulled the Challenger up to the curb of Ty's house, which immediately earned her the attention of Mikey. He walked toward the car completely stunned, all but having his tongue lulled out of his mouth at the very sight.

“Kat? Please tell me this is a rental.” He begged as he leaned down to talk through the now opened window.

“Certainly, but I kinda like it. Might have to look into getting one.” Katia laughed as she petted the slick steering wheel.

Mikey wiped his grease covered hands with a rag that was dangling from his back pocket. “I'm sorry about Cameron.” He spoke as he looked away trying to keep his eyes diverted from Katia.

“I'm hurt, but I'd rather know now. The worse part was I thought he was the one.” Katia's strong voice began to waver as she kneaded her hands in her lap. She quickly snapped out of her pity party to look up at Mikey. “Hey don't you need to go in and get ready?”

“Yeah, I guess so. Why don't you come in, I'm sure Mazy would love to see you.” Mikey grinned like he used to when they were younger. Time had been generous to Mikey, he arms were by far more brawny than they were before and his hands were permanently stained from various car fluids. Though he was rough around the edges, he was still just as attractive as he was ten years before.

Katia carefully slipped out of the car, making sure to lock it up before she entered the ranch style house. But before she could pass the threshold she was slammed into by a loud six year old. “Aunt Kitty!” Mazy squealed in delight as she hugged Katia's middle.

“Mazy! Look how big you've gotten!” She pulled the little girl back to get a better look at her. Mazy look exactly like Tiana had as a child but her eyes were blue like her father's and her dark brown hair had a slight curl to the ends unlike Katia or Tiana had growing up.

“I'm six now!” She immediately held up all five fingers on one hand and an additional one on another hand.

“Wow, that's a big number!” Katia grinned at the happy girl. “How is school?”

“Good, I got Mrs. Pittman as my first grade teacher! Mommy says that she was your teacher too.” Mazy grabbed Katia's hand and pulled her toward the living room that was slightly disheveled with toys and cartoons blaring on the television.

“Mrs. Pittman, huh? Yep, she was my first grade teacher.” Katia smiled happily as the little girl continued to rattle on.

A knock at the door startled Katia, but as she looked around she noticed neither Ty or Mikey were around. “Who could that be?” Katia gave Mazy a questioning look.

“My babysitter, Kelsey.” Mazy said matter-factually as she walked toward the door.
