It's been a week since Sam told me the news of our latest threat, and finally it had come. In this last week my days were spent avoiding my mother and looking after Serenity teaching her as much as I could. She now knew enough words to start forming half sentences, and by that I mean she was able to say enough to get her point across but not enough to be called a proper sentence. When she spoke she would leave out some words here and there. It was cute and adorable but we were all so happy that she was finally talking. Emma still hadn't given Serenity the all clear to start walking but she could stand on her feet without falling over.
Although you couldn't see it yet, Emma and I were sure she was putting on more weight. Serenity had also gotten into a sleeping routine now. She would sleep for a few hours, wake up, eat, take a bath or go and do some activity before falling asleep again. It would still be a while when she had enough energy to stay up longer than a couple of hours.
My mother was persistent as ever and so was the school. I had called the school though yesterday and told them I wouldn't be in for a while due to a family issue. My mother was getting more and more difficult to deal with. She was persistent in trying to know why I was avoiding her. That was why I had finally given in and told her she could come visit today. This morning I had gotten up early to pack up all of Serenity's stuff that we had left out last night.
She had woken up in the middle of the night and was hungry and wanted to play, so we had but by the time she fell asleep I was too tired to pack up. Emma had set up not only the record notebook we were using to keep track of Serenity's progress but a chart by my fridge where I was writing the times she would wake up and what we would do. After cleaning up the house I went back to my room and took a quick shower before shrugging on some clean jeans and a dark red button down shirt. By the time I had done all that there was two hours till my mother was arriving.
When I was talking to her over the phone I had told her that this had to do with my mate and immediately she had bombarded me with questions. I had simply said she would have to wait to meet her. So of course Serenity had to be awake to meet my mother but I wasn't waking her up yet. I left my room and went downstairs to make lunch and get drinks ready. Once all that was set up there was only an hour left, and knowing my mother she would turn up early to surprise me. So quickly I went upstairs and found Serenity still curled up fast asleep.
This was the part I hated, waking her up since she was still recovering, but once she had met my mother she could go back to sleep. I kept repeating that phrase in my head as I sat on the side of the bed and gently shook her shoulder to wake her. She stirred and rolled over burying herself into my pillows and sheets again. I smiled and shook her again.
