Chapter 14
She was wearing a simple gray blazer over a black t-shirt and for the first time since I've seen her, jeans and sneakers. Her hair was mussed up a bit and her eyes were wild with what looked like frenzy. I could've kissed the ground she walked on right now if there weren't a pack of werewolves still out there. "Louis?" Bea said, as surprised as I was. She let go of the chair she was using to ram the door and ran to support me as I nearly fainted from the mixture of head pains and relief. "What are you doing here?" I gasped from the pain as she touched the mark the werewolf made. "Those werewolves stalked me too. I managed to grab a silver knife that I got as a gift but they knocked me unconscious. Thankfully I put it in my pocket so they didn't get it. I just woke up a few seconds ago," she said hurriedly. "C'mon. We have to leave now," she urged. I let her support me as I walked into the room. The living room didn't look like there was much of a fight. No blood, none of the scratch marks that I expected. I only just noticed a woman's naked form in the corner. She was lying on her back so I could see her face clearly. It was definitely Mrs. Deborah Wade. There was a rash building up on the front of her face where I dangled the silver. I almost felt guilty that I did that to her face. Then I remembered what she did to my uncle and Paul and almost to me. They even kidnapped Dinah and killed those innocent people. I almost kicked her out of spite. There was a silver dagger jutting out of the dead woman's side. The skin around the wound had black vein-like tendril running away from it. I guess sticking it in them is more effective than just slapping them with silver. Just listen to me talking like there was a going to be another werewolf smackdown after this. Even I had trouble believing it and I'm still here. Bea walked calmly over to the Mrs. Wade and yanked the silver dagger out of her. "My family's into ancient relics," she said noting my stare, shrugging. "It's some kind of ceremonial dagger." Steam was coming off the blade where it was stained with blood. There were symbols etched into the blade. She wiped off the blood on the sleeves of her blazer and tucked it through her belt, the hilt showing off. The hilt looked ornately crafted. It didn't look like wood though, maybe ivory or deer antlers. Then I remembered. I looked around and they were nowhere to be found. "Where's my uncle?" I asked though I thought I already knew. "I'm sorry Louis," she said remorsefully. "When I got here, the other wolf took your uncle and his partner and ran off. I was probably lucky. I doubted I would've been able to fight off two of them." I felt a ball drop in my stomach. They were gone. The wolves would probably use them for whatever bizarre ritual they were planning. My head snapped up. "Did you see Alex or Dinah?" I asked hopefully. She shook her head and I frowned. They were still in danger. "Louis," she began. "I'm sorry for what you've been through and your losses-" "They're not dead yet," I muttered grimly. "Maybe not. But we're as good as if we don't get out of here. Those monsters are still out there and who knows when they'll get back?" She hurried through her words. "I think I saw police lights flashing through the trees when I was brought here. They must be close and I can't be sure the wolves won't risk exposing themselves to the authorities. We have to go now, Louis," she said darkly. "Come on," she said as she walked to the door. I nodded quickly. I knew she was right. I don't know how, but we were going to find my friends and my family. We were no good to them dead. The police were coming and we would be a lot safer with them. I hoped they brought a lot of men. The werewolves seemed cautious. They didn't do anything before that would make them noticeable to the neighbors when they were at my house. I probably wouldn't have realized they were there if they weren't growling and snarling outside. Hey, why were they doing that? It sounded almost like they weren't directing it at me, like they wanted the neighbors to notice them. They were calm and unnoticeable when they crept up so close to us in the woods. We wouldn't have seen them in the dark if it weren't for those....yellow eyes? Mrs. Wade-wolf didn't have yellow eyes. The rush of adrenaline was still there. Adrenaline helps us do things we normally can't do. It makes us stronger, helps us run faster. There are hundreds of stories out there about how adrenaline could boost your system to the point that everything seemed to slow down. The last part wasn't true. Adrenaline couldn't slow down time for your brain, or else it would do more harm than good. It just stretches your capacity to think and helps you take in more detail than you normally could. That's what was happening now.
