It had been five years since we had gotten married, Embry and I. Two years before that, he proposed. Nine years ago, we became an official couple.
It was strange thinking we were so grown up now. We had matured so much. So had Maya and Seth.
Maya and I were twenty-five now. Somehow, we’d ended up going to college for the same thing: teaching. Not the same grade though. Maya taught first grade while I taught fifth. It really confused the kindergarteners when they saw us together. There had been more than one incident when we’d been called a wrong name or made a little kid cry because he was scared.
My nieces were nine now. They grew so fast and were so beautiful. Sometimes I was jealous of Maya for being a mother. I wanted kids! I couldn’t wait for kids! But then I realized that I was happy to wait. I would rather be ready completely then jumping right into it.
“Are you almost ready?” Embry asked, peeking into the bedroom as I was smoothing out my dress.
“Yeah, let’s go.” I took his hand, enjoying the familiar and comforting feeling of electricity flow through my veins from his touch. We were heading over to Maya and Seth’s for the girl’s birthday party—the family portion. The next day would be the one for friends.
Maya and Seth didn’t live far away, just a few houses down actually. I liked living close to my twin. She was my other half. I couldn’t stand being far from her. We walked straight into the house without knocking and smiled at the girls, who were watching something on TV. They were completely oblivious to us standing behind them.
“I’m gonna go talk to Maya.”
“All right.” Embry murmured back. I watched for a moment as he slowly crept closer to the girls then screamed “Boo!” They screamed and jumped. The looks on their faces were priceless.
I smiled and moved toward the kitchen. “Oh, twin!”
Maya nearly tackled me when I stepped in. “I have to talk to you!”
“Cool, I have to talk to you first.”
She grabbed my wrist and dragged me upstairs to her and Seth’s room, closing and locking the door behind her.
“Geez, you’re excited,” I commented.
“I am! I’ve been waiting days to tell you this.”
“Why days?” I asked. “I saw you yesterday.”
“Well, it didn’t feel right until today. But first, what did you want to tell me?”
“No, you can go first.”
“Okay, same time!” I declared.
We both a deep breath. I held up three fingers and slowly took them down one-by-one. Once the last one dropped, we both blurted, “I’m pregnant.”
I stared at her. She stared at me. “Really?” she asked, jumping up and down on the balls of her feet.
