The Other Side 1: Where am I?

Chapter 1: Where am I?

Kate woke up to the sound of chirping birds and wind blowing on her face.

Huh? She thought. Slowly opening her eyes, the first thing she saw was clear blue sky, clouds and tree tops swaying gently to the wind.

Huh? Did I accidentally fell asleep in the park? She thought to herself.

She felt grass beneath her. The full realization hit her that she was no longer in her room and presumably somewhere outside where she didn't even know where. She sat up quickly and realised she was wearing a man's suit.

Huh, what on earth had happened!? She thought. I'm sure as hell that I don't own this suit in my wardrobe at all!

Then, she noticed her hands. They didn't seem to be hers. They were bigger and the fingers were thicker. They seemed to belong to a man's than her. Her heart raced and she panicked. She touched her face and head. She felt all of them did not belong to her, especially her hair. They were short. Her hair was always long. She became horrified. She pinched herself hard and felt the pain. She couldn't take the craziness anymore and got on her feet and screamed.

"AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!" She screamed as she clenched the side of her head and she stopped. Her voice had changed!

"What the hell happened to me!?" She yelled again, to no one. "Did someone switch my body in my sleep or something!?" Then she looked around her and realized she was in a clearing in the forest. Surrounding her were trees. Then she noticed something on the grass. It was a big grey gun. Looking at it, she slowly walked towards it.

"Hey, you got to be kidding me," She said, chuckling as if she's going crazy as she picked up the gun. The cold metal and the weight of the gun felt really real in her hand. "Isn't this the Dominator that's in the anime Psycho Pass?"

She examined the gun a while and decided to hold on to it. Then something clicked in her head. Man's suit, short hair, and the Dominator. Isn't it her avatar in Connection Circle, Kougami Shinya who dressed like this and had this gun. Did I turn into him!? She thought to herself. The whole thing is ridiculous but she needed to look at herself to confirm. She checked through the pockets in her jacket for any mirror but found none except a cigarette box, a lighter and a pocket knife. All these were something Kougami would carry which seemed to confirm her suspicion.

She decided to walk around in search for lakes or river or whatever would let her see her reflection . She started exploring the forest. After what seemed like an hour, she finally found a lake. She knelt down and looked at her own reflection. Instead of hers, she saw Kougami's reflection. She screamed again.

"This is real! Oh no, what am I gonna do!!" She screamed, clenching the side of her head. Then an idea crossed her mind. Maybe if she sleeps again, she might find herself back in her bed. She set the Dominator beside her, lied down and shut her eyes. After a while she heard tiny footsteps running towards her.

"Get away from the lake you fool!" A high pitch voice yelled. She opened her eyes and saw a puppy beside her, tugging her collar.

She didn't know why, she obeyed and instantly got up. Grabbing the puppy and the gun and ran as fast as she could from the lake. Just she was already in a fair distance from the lake, a large fish with big yellow eyes, surfaced from the side of the lake where she lay few moments ago. The fish's head was huge, about the size of a small car.

Kate's eyes bulged when she saw it. Her knees gave up on her and she collapsed on her butt. Just a few minutes ago, she would have been eaten up in one gulp.

"If you had stayed there longer, you would have been fish food," the voice said. Kate shakily looked around her for the owner of the voice.

"Down here."

She looked down, and saw the puppy looking up at her with its big shiny brown eyes.

"Yup, that's me."

"AHHH!!! The puppy talks!" Kate yelled in shocked.

"Shut up!" The puppy yelled. "If there's giant man-eating fish, why can't there be talking puppies?"

"Yeah... you're right," She said, calming down. She gave a huge sigh.

"What's your name?" The puppy asked.

"Kate."

"That's a way too girly name for a guy."

"Well, I'm not always a guy," Kate replied dejectedly, holding her knees close to her chest. She felt lost. She didn't know what to do.

"Cheer up," the puppy nudged her with its paw. "Tell me what happened."

"I don't know. I don't even know how I got here and how did I switched bodies. All of these felt like a dream, but I can't seem to wake up from it."

"OH! Me too" The puppy yelled. 

Kate looked at it with wide eyes. Then a realization suddenly crossed her mind. She picked up the puppy and held it at her eye level.

"Were you once human?"

"Yeah! The last thing I remembered was I was working late at night at my laptop and I fell asleep! And the next thing I found myself waking up here!"

"Oh my god! That's what happened to me too!" Kate yelled excitedly. "I'm not alone!" She yelled and hugged the puppy.

"Ughhh! Let me go. You are suffocating me!"

"Oops, sorry," she said, embarrassed. She put the puppy down.

"My name is Cassie. Please to meet you," she said, holding up her paw for her to shake it.

"Pfffttt! Hahahaha!" Kate laughed. "You looked so cute!"

"Shut up! This is not funny at all!" She yelled angrily, baring her tiny teeth at her. "Wait till you get stuck in a small animal's body, then you'll know how I feel!"

"Yeah, you're right," Kate laughed, wiping away a tear. "But you just looked so funny and cute I can't resist."

"Shut up big guy. We need to get moving soon, who knows what other monsters are lurking in the forest?"

That quieted her down. What Cassie said was right. If there's a monster in the lake, who knows what other monsters are there?

"Yeah, we better get moving soon." Kate got up and took the gun. Cassie quickly jumped and grabbed hold of her shoulder.

"Hey, can't you walk on your own?"

"Hey, I'm in a puppy's body, I tire quickly. And I'll be any monster's number one target if I'm on my own. I just saved your life and this is how you repay me?" She complained.

"Fine," Kate sighed.

Together they set out in search for a safe place to spend the night in.
