Prologue:

It felt like my world was on hold. Like everything that had just happened wasn’t really … real. Like, at any moment I would jolt awake and be lying in my bed staring at the window across the back wall of my room. My eyes were squeezed tight; afraid of what I might see when I opened them. I took a deep breath.

I felt the breathy air from the heater blowing in the room – trying to melt away the January breeze. While sitting on something soft, I could hear people murmuring, whispering, and waiting for me to open my eyes.

Okay, on three Kaia. You can do this. I told myself, even though I knew I was lying. One…two…three… I peeked with one eye, and then the other soon followed. I had no idea where I was – sitting up in an all-white bed, staring at a well-furnished room full of strangers. Then my eyes stopped on my dad. He slouched and stared right at me, desperation pleading in his eyes. One man, who looked important with his tucked-in dress shirt and well-ironed slacks, wrote a few things down in a yellow legal pad while studying me very carefully.

“Where am I?” I finally asked, a yawn following the request. Stretching as if I’d just woken up from a weeklong nap, something clicked inside my mind. “What day is it?” I demanded, dismissing the earlier question.

“It’s Friday.” Dad responded cautiously, keeping what seemed like an extraordinary distance away from me. “The ninth,” he added with wide eyes as he watched me look around the room.

Friday? But the last thing I remembered was being escorted out of school Monday by two of the largest security guards I’d ever seen. How could I have slept the entire week away? Was I sick? Had I been in a coma?

A woman with choppy brown hair wearing an ill-fitting pair of jeans reached to hand me a bottle of water. “You’re probably dehydrated. You should drink,” she advised, before continuing with her introduction, “I’m Mary, Mary Melvin. I help to take care of all our patients and their rooms.”

“Patients? You sent me to a hospital?” I yelled at Dad, who remained unmoved by this reaction. It made me wonder if he had expected this. I immediately pushed the covers off of me and darted across the room – desperate to escape. “How could you?” I cried, feeling the hot rush of tears fall down my cheeks.

“Please sweetheart, this is for the better,” Dad insisted, coming over to smooth some stray hairs on my head. He kissed the top of it before the well-dressed man urged him away.

“Go,” I snapped, staring at the ground, but no one moved. “Go!” I yelled once more, straight at my dad. “I can’t believe you sent me here! You’re a traitor, and a liar, and I never want to see your face again!”

Dad tried to argue, but was silenced by the other adults in the room. “Kaia, I’m sorry,” he cried while being gestured towards the door. “This was never meant to punish you! I’m just trying to help, please sweetheart!” he begged before the door shut – separating the two of us.

My golden eyes remained unfazed as they narrowed in on the door and then faced the two adults in front of me, who began explaining my “condition” in terms I had yet to understand. “Please,” I growled through clenched teeth, “Just leave me alone.”
