Chapter 1

I finished brushing my glossy brown hair and then I looked at myself long and hard in the mirror.

"Georgie Miller," I said to my reflection. "This a new, fresh start. So don’t you dare go mucking it up, ok? This is your chance to be whoever you want to be and you’re not going back to being that girl..."

My gaze drifted over to a photo of me that had been taken less than a year earlier. Staring back at me from the picture was a podgy girl with glasses, blue braces and her hair had been styled in uneven pigtails. Ugh, I looked hideous.

"So, don’t you mess this up" I began saying to myself again. "This is..."

"Georgie, get your backside down here now!" a voice shouted from downstairs.

I sighed. How typical it was for Brendan to interrupt my motivational speech. Reluctantly, I grabbed my school bag and made my way downstairs, out of the house and down the drive. I could see my older brother just ahead of me, fumbling with the keys to his pick-up truck.

‘Got your glasses?’ Brendan teased.

I glared at him. I was short-sighted and I had to wear glasses from time to time. This time, however, it was going to be different.

"Dad brought me contacts, actually" I retorted, climbing into the truck.

In fact, Dad had done pretty much everything that I had asked him to. He’d brought me contacts, even though I still had to carry my glasses around, and he’d let me get highlights in my hair. But what surprised me most was that he had brought me a mobile phone. I know that most nearly-seventeen year olds have had a mobile phone for years, but Dad was always against the idea.

"It’s only because he made us move house" Brendan said.

"Again" I added, staring out of the window and watching our perfect suburban street rush by.

"And all for some job at a grotty garage."

I turned to face Brendan. "It’s not any grotty garage job. Dad owns his own mechanics garage thingy."

Brendan chuckled and I playfully slapped him. I was a girl. What was I meant to know about garages except for the fact that they were greasy and oily.

"If you want to get technical, Dad is now working in the field of mechanical engineering" Brendan mocked me.

When the truck pulled up in the school car park, I was so relieved to be free of his company that I practically threw myself out of the vehicle. As I made my way towards the school office, my eyes scanned the surroundings of my new school. It was bigger than my previous one, but that was about the only thing that distinguished it from every other school on the planet.

I pushed open the blue painted doors and waited patiently until the office secretary noticed me.

"Can I help you?" she asked, rather bluntly.

"Yeah," I began. "I’m new here."

The secretary flicked through a bunch of papers. "Name?"

"Georgie Miller."

"Do you mean Georgina Miller?"

"That’s the one."

She handed me over a thin folder that was secured with an elastic band. Sticking out of the sides, I could see edges of various pieces of paper.

"That’s your schedule and everything that you need. Welcome to Evermont High" she forcefully smiled.

I thanked her and made my way out of the office. But before I could, I was practically attacked by another pupil.

"Hi" she greeted me enthusiastically. "You must be Georgie right?"

I nodded. The girl was about my age and height, and she had mid-length blonde hair with a just-tumbled out of bed look about it.

"Cool. I’m Amy. I’ll show you around and all that rubbish" she told me, snatching the folder out of my hands and pulling out my class schedule. "Hey, you have Mathematics first. Same as me. You can sit next to me. I’m sure Mr Simons won’t mind."

I didn’t know what to say. Amy was pretty full-on. I settled on just smiling in response.
