If She Only Knew...

"So Dyl, found anyone 'interesting' yet?"

Sharon put her elbows on the table and propped her head on her hands.

It was a familiar ritual to Dylan and he absolutely hated every second of it. With a frown, he turned away from Sharon, his childhood and long-time friend.

Not this again. Please let it be over fast this time. Please please please.

His vision settled on a couple a few tables in front. They were both laughing at what the other had said, obviously flirting with one another. Dylan smiled thinly.

"OI. DYLAN! I'm talking to you! Don't you freaking ignore me!", Sharon raised her voice.

Dylan turned back to the tomboy-ish looking girl in front of him.

"Seriously. Quit with the constant asking. Answer's still the same. None.", Dylan's reply was curt. "Now... if you're not treating me to lunch I'm going.". He got up.

"Okay okay! Sorry! Sit back down!"

Dylan sat. It was trouble to go against Sharon and her unpredictable temper.

Sharon grinned, "Thanks.". "Ya better eat quick 'kay? I gotta go meet Wendy at 2pm."

"Ah yes. Wendy.". There was a hint of disapproval in Dylan's voice, but Sharon was too oblivious to notice.

It still cut pretty deep in Dylan whenever Sharon mentioned Wendy. Wendy was Sharon's girlfriend. A recently new one in fact. He tried not to think about it.

Dylan glanced over at the couple in front. The two men were getting up to leave. Hand in hand they strolled out of the restaurant. He felt like he could literally see their love for each other radiating off the two guys. It was a little nauseating he had to admit.

"Food's here."

A plate of chicken chop drowned in gravy was placed in front of him.

"Eat up and enjoy it while it lasts.", Sharon laughed.

Dylan picked up his knife and fork and dug in.

He loved eating. Besides having godly-high metabolism that kept him from getting fat no matter how much he ate ("LUCKY BASTARD!", Sharon was always jealous.), eating also gave him a little time to think. He loved thinking too. It was an awesome way to past the time. He could let his mind wander for hours and still not be bored out of his mind. Though, thinking also had its cons. Dylan always ended up going back to the same old topic eventually.

Shit. Am, I the ONLY one in this damn world who loves someone NOT of the same gender?!

He had realised his unique and socially taboo orientation 2 years back. It was extremely traumatising for the poor guy. After agonising and living through that psycologically, emotionally and physically taxing period, he was a changed man.

Dylan, with a mouth full of chicken, started to find Sharon watching him eating.

She smiled, "Glad you're liking it."

He found it impossible to smile back with a mouth full of chicken so squinted his eyes in response.

Awhile later, Dylan had finished his meal. Sharon paid the bill and the both of them left the restaurant.

"Phew. Still gonna be able to make it in time. Good ya eat fast as usual."

"Thanks for the meal."

"No problem. See ya again soon yeah? Talk on skype or something."

"Alright.". Dylan decided to take this chance. "Gimme a hug."

Sharon stared at him. After a few moments, she let out a sigh and reluctantly agreed.

Dylan stepped forward, threw his arms around his best friend, and squeezed. Tight.

"Argh! I need to breathe! Enough! Enough!"

Dylan laughed and let go.

"See ya!", Sharon ran off along the pavement while Dylan watched her back disappear form view.

He lifted his hands and studied them as they slowly lost the feeling of Sharon's warm back. He hadn't wanted to let go.

2 homosexual couples strolled into his view, a guy pair and a girl pair.

Ugh. Double date... Should head home.

Hating himself for getting in a depressing mood, dylan risked a last glance at the direction Sharon had gone. A new wave of emotions hit him hard and he smacked his head for being so stupid. His heart ached more than his head did. He ran a hand through his hair, stuck both hands in his jean pockets, then started on the long trudge home.

"If she only knew..."
