Chapter 1

The Chase

Mom don't go, you can't leave me here! I need you...

Sorry, my dear daughter, I have to. Don't you remember that I have to protect the world against the Dark Masters?

Forget about the Dark Masters and the world. You know that I need you.  
Quit whining! I'll be back before you know it.

Very well. Bit, remember to protect mom from ANY harm!

Rika, don't worry about me! I'll be fine and you will too. Good bye for now.

Bye Mom! I'll miss you dearly.

  Rika groans. She opens her eyes and looks at her surroundings. Bundles of grass surround her, making it impossible for her to see anything. Against the odds, she manages to spot an enormous dark shape that bound toward her. With a surprised yell, Rika scrambles for the woods, hoping that it will serve her as a cover.  

In the dark night, Rika runs toward the woods with all her might. She looks back and sees the dark shape approaching her at a fast rate.  

"Go away!" she yells but the dark shadow never slowed down.  

A whitish, blue color flashed before her eyes, and with a grunt, she finds herself on the ground. She feels a heavy claw dig into her back. Slowly, she turns her head and looks into the unmistakable, deep blue eyes of a dragon.

  "Wh-why are you chasing me? What do you want?"  

The blue eyes, that hold a hint of wisdom, looks back at her calmly. A voice comes across Rika's mind.  

"I am bonded to you. You are my partner and nothing can change that."

"What are you talking about??? If I don't know you, how can I be bound to you?" Rika asks.

"I don't know if you still remember, but when I was still a dragon-ling, you accidentally touched me. From that day on, I have been bound to you mentally. I have been watching over you since the day that you touched me. I even know that you are trying to search for your lost mother." 

"MIND READER! LEAVE ME ALONE! AND DON'T YOU DARE TALK ABOUT MY MOTHER!" Rika breathes heavily from exhaustion and the lack of air because the dragon is cutting it off while placing its claws on her.  

"Please try to understand. I'm only trying to help."  

"Alright, do me a favor. WILL YOU PLEASE GET OFF OF ME?!"  

The dragon takes its claws off and takes a step backward, leaving Rika to get up, she turned and took a good look at the dragon.  

The dragon's scales are sapphire blue with a little white tint on the edge of them, making them glow every time the dragon moved. The wings are what takes Rika's breath away. The wings are also sapphire, but at the tip, the blue fades away and is replaced with a transparent blue. The eyes are most unique. All dragons have yellow, cat-like eyes, but never has Rika seen such a beautiful deep, blue set of eyes.  

The alluring eye color reminds Rika of something, Bit, Rika's mother's dragon, has the same colored eyes. The thought of Bit brings tears to her eyes, causing Rika to hug her bloodied knees close to her chest and break out into sobs. The disappearance of her mother is just too much for her to handle.  

She sobs and sobs until a cold, rough snout nuzzles against her.  

"Hey, it's okay. I'll help you find her. We can cover more distance in the air, compared to walking."  

Rika looks at the dragon with teary eyes and says, "Together?"  

"Together."  

"What's your name?" Rika asks still sniffing.  

The dragon bows her head and looks shamefully at her claws, "I don't have a name until I have a rider, but I have found one right now."  

"Well, my name is Rika, which I bet you already know, I'll name you... Lana, which means calm, as still water."  

"I like that name, it fits me. Thank you. But we must get out of here quickly, the woods are unsafe at night and things can get rough with the firedogs."  

"Yeah, let's move it."
