Chapter 43- After Hours of a Teenage Boy

"There's always, always something to be thankful for."- Unknown

"So, I need a small favor." I mutter to JC as we both hover over Colton in his plastic bath tub.

"What is it?" He asks, handing me the wet cloth after ringing the soap out.

"I have a doctor's appointment in the morning around ten. I was hoping that maybe you can watch Colton for a little bit when I'm gone. I had asked my mom, but she has this group meeting thing she's in charge of." I explain nervously, feeling my stomach churn just thinking about leaving Colton alone. It would be the first time and I don't feel well about it.

"I have work tomorrow at twelve. Will you be done by then?" He asks as I wipe the soap off Colton's body.

"Oh yeah! It should only be a half hour or so. It's not long. I can bring him over your house in the morning. Will your mom be home?" I question, wiping Colton's head carefully so the soapy water wouldn't drip into his eyes.

"Yeah she'll be home. Why, don't trust me alone completely with our baby?" He smirks, unfolding the ducky towel that sat on the corner of the sink.

"Just in case something goes wrong or you need help." I reason, handing him off to JC with the towel wide open. I help wrap the towel around Colton and cover his head with the corner of the towel with the duck face. "I'll make sure everything is done when I drop him off, fed, bathe, changed."

"Don't worry about it." He says with a shrug, walking down stairs with Colton in his arms, "Are you going to feed him right now?" He asks, turning to the living room where the changing table is.

I looked in the fridge, finding no containers of pumped milk, "Yeah, I'll feed him."

A minute later he walks back in the room with a clothed Colton, "Wait, you said tomorrow, right?" JC questions, handing Colton over to me.

"Yeah tomorrow morning. Why?" I confirm, opening one of the cabinet draws and grabbing a burp towel and bib.

"Nothing." He says hesitantly, figuring something out privately in his head. "Nine o'clock?"

"Ten. I can drop Colton off around half past nine if that's alright with you." I suggest, kissing the top of Colton's head as I go back for the stairs again.

"Half past nine, quarter to ten, sure. Call when you leave the house." He says, standing on the bottom step. "Just, uh, I'll be ready and awake-"

"JC if you have other plans that fine. I can bring Colton I just thought-"

"No, no, yeah it's fine. You know me, I wake up after ten unless I need to be somewhere." He excuses, waving his hand in the air.

"Yeah." I mutter finding it a bit suspicious. "I'm going to feed Colton. You might want to leave now it's almost one o'clock. Your break is almost over." I tell him, standing at the top of the stairs.

"Oh yeah, I've got to hurry. I'll see you tomorrow or something." He says, jogging to the front door.

"I'll call you-" Slam! "Tonight." I huff. I'm sure he knows I'll be calling him.

With Colton sleeping in his crib, and everyone else sleeping in their beds, I finally laid in my own bed with my clean hair damp from just showering. I'm exhausted, and lying in bed felt awfully comfortable at midnight. Just like I promised as well though, I grabbed my phone and scrolled for JC's number, getting into the habit now to call him every night in hopes that my words would give him a good night's sleep.
