THIS STORY IS BASED OFF OF TRUE EVENTS BY REAL PEOPLE NAMED MICHAEL AND JOEL STOVALL. ALL OTHER CHARACTERS ARE PURELY FICTIONAL AND EVENTS THAT PASS CHAPTER 3 ARE ALSO FICTIONAL.
THIS IS WHY I PLACED THIS STORY UNDER HISTORICAL FICTION BECAUSE IT IS BASED ON TRUE EVENTS BUT WERE PUT INTO A TWIST AND THOUGH JOEL AND MICHAEL STOVALL WERE REAL PEOPLE WHO WERE APART OF THESE EVENTS, THEY ARE FICTIONAL HERE IN THE SENSE THAT I CHANGED THEIR PERSONALITIES AND THEIR DECISIONS ALONG WITH HOW THINGS WORK OUT FOR THEM.
(If you'd like to know more, I learned about their story while watching on this channel called ID where they had this show called Evil Twins and they talked about the Stovall twins. Feel free to look more into their story; it's extremely interesting)
And so, I hope you enjoy the story. The beginning is rough and I still have yet to go back and edit it since my writing's changed since I've started this story.
"You're either with us or against us, Elle," Michael and Joel said in unison.
They were fugitives. Their names were known throughout the entire state of Colorado and were with no doubt spreading throughout the states. They were dangerous, there was no question about it, and they had killed people. They had guns and I had seen a completely different side of them that I'd never seen before.
I was having an internal battle in my mind as I weighed out the pros and cons. While there was a side of me that was telling me that it was all just bad, bad, and more bad and told me that I should just walk away. I should go back home and go back to the comfort my family would offer. I could go back to my normal life and continue going to Stanford.
But then there was another side that craved something like this. The idea of being on the run, of traveling, of being on a constant adrenaline rush. There was something enticing about it that I couldn't decipher. And above all, there was a part of me that kept saying, "These guys are your best friends and they always will be." I knew that this was the wrong choice, but as if to console myself, I thought about how this could be an experience that I could use as inspiration for writing--as I was going to Stanford to become a writer. Maybe I've already lost my sanity, I thought as I made my decision.
"I'm with you," I confirmed. They both looked at each other and smirked. Just like they did when I first met them.
"Are you sure, Elle? You've always been such a good girl," Michael teased.
"And to think that the Goodie two-shoes is gonna run away with the bad boys of America?" Joel asked. I rolled my eyes and replied, "I'm sure." With another silent exchange, Michael and Joel nodded to each other.
Michael grabbed his rifle and sat in the back of the truck they had covered with black paint, hiding the original red color. Joel got into the driver's seat and I hopped into the passenger's seat. Joel started the car and reached into his bag to pull out a hand gun.
"Take this," he said handing it to me. "You'll need it." He got onto the freeway, driving away into the night.
I could still hear the faint sounds of sirens, the sounds of guns shooting, and the shouts of my name being called. But I was probably going to have to get used to it because then again, I'm running away with the Stovall Twins.
