He didn't come home. I was laying in the bed, dazed from pain and not sleeping. Why didn't Daddy come home? Was something wrong? Did he leave without me? I couldn't move. I knew I had to get ready for school, but I just couldn't get up. Tears began to stream down my bony cheeks. Slowly I sat up to get ready for school, and screamed out in pain. My arm was in excruciating pain. I peeked down at it and nearly threw up. It was twisted in a backwards "U" with bruises covering every inch. How in the world was I going to hide this?!?! I sobbed until I fell on to the floor and then screamed out again as my arm collided with the rough carpet. Downstairs I heard something glass break. She's awake.

I curled up in a ball with my back against the bed frame and waited for her to come bursting through the door. To my suprise, she was there faster than I thought. For a second she just stood in the door way staring at me and then started screaming.

"Dammit get up! Now I'm gonna have to take you to the freaking doctor. You can't go to school looking like this! What were you thinking?!? Do you want to be taken away from me?" She screamed into my ears.

"No," I replied, "I fell." I whispered. I knew better than to fight her.

"God. Just go get in the damn car." She spat at me, and then went downstairs.

I listened, and went to go sit in her rusty, beatup car. She came stumbling out a few minutes later with a bottle of beer in one hand, and the keys in the other. I'm going to die, I thought. She fumbled with the keys, but finaly managed to get them in the slot and started the car. While backing out of the driveway, she almost hit the neighbors fence, and then she was speeding down the road. I held onto my seat for dear life and tried to keep my breathing even. Every time she would hit a bump or go around a curve, my arm would bump into the door and I would scream out in pain. This always resulted in a loud "Shut up" from my mother. Eventually, we made it to the hospital.

My mother stumbled in the door dragging me behind. She stopped when she got inside and combed thorugh her hair with her fingers. The act was about to begin.

"My child's hurt, someone please get a doctor!" She begged the receptionists at the desk. They looked over at me and informed my mom that a doctor would be on his way and that we needed to take a seat until that time. She nodded sadly and went to sit in one of the hard chairs next to me. She put her head in her hands and began to "cry."

"Oh baby, I'm so sorry. I should have went outside with you. I'm so sorry. I can't believe you fell out of that tree." She sobbed. I just sat there in silence. She was a pretty good actress. If I didn't know what really happened, and what she's really like, I would have believed her too. When a doctor walked in and called my name my mother jumped up and started thanking him.

"Oh thankyou doctor. Please, fix my baby." She begged him, holding onto his arm. Her gently pushed her off.

"I will don't worry. You just stay out here and I'll take Lily back to be examined." He said smoothly to her. His clear blue eyes looked trustworthy and his clean cut pale blond hair made him look professional. He took my hand and led me back into the examining room.

"We are going to need some x-rays," He told me while having me lay on a cold metal table and putting a heavy vest over my chest, "Although I can definatly say that arm is broken." He said with a small smile. I smiled too. I liked him. He was nice to me, and in a way he reminded me of my daddy. Thinking about Daddy made tears come to my eyes again as I thought about how he didn't come home to me. The doctor saw my tears and patted me on the head.

"It's okay darling it will all be over soon." He smiled, before walking out and closing the door.

The x-rays took only a few minutes and then the doctor was back to take me to another room. He told me to sit on the little bed thing they had, and began hanging up my x-rays on a white, glowing board.

"See this little white sliver?" He asked me, drawing a circle around it with his pen. I nodded. "Well that is a little piece of a bone that snapped off when you got hurt. You're going to need surgery to fix it." He informed me. I always thought that this is what you told the parents and not the kids, but either way I got more use out of the information than my mother would.

"I'm going to go speak with your Mother, and Nurse Johnson here will take you to get preped for surgery." He said motioning to a tall blond nurse behind him. She smiled and led me to yet another room where she helped me get into a white cotton gown that tied in the back. I wondered if she saw the bruises, and if she would say anything. Once I was dressed, she had me sit on the bed and gave me some purple medicine in a small plastic cup.

"Now this medicine is going to make you very sleepy, so I want you to lay back and just wait for one of us to come get you. Okay?" She informed me sweetly.

"Yes ma'am." I said and then laid my head back against the pillow. After a few minutes my eyes started drooping and my breathing became shallow. I was almost asleep when the nurse came back accompanied by two doctors. They helped me into a wheelchair and then took me into the operating room. I was laid on a table, and then someone put a mask over my mouth and nose.

"Take four deep breaths through your nose." A doctor told me. I listened and started breathing in through my nose. By the third breath, I was unconscious.
