 CHAPTER FIVE

“Thank goodness it’s Thursday,” Sam muttered, as she settled into her seat in second periodthat morning. She had done some advance reading the night before and had slept late. She was now feeling the serious need for a caffeine fix.

“You look a right mess,” Chloe noticed, sitting beside her.  She, on the other hand, looked as colourful as ever in her electric pink dress and square white earrings. “Did you have a fight with man-meat again?”

“Nope... He wasn’t in first period. I got carried away reading last night,” Sam said, cracking the book in question open. “What about you?”

A smile crept over Chloe’s lips as she said, “I was with Vander.”

“Again? What did you do? I tried calling you but you weren’t picking up.”

“We were busy... In his car... Making out...” Chloe answered in all honesty.

Sam sneered, “Eww. Please, have mercy and spare me the details... I haven’t eaten yet.”

“You are such a loser, Sam,” Chloe snickered. “What is wrong with you? You’re like a child that thinks kissing boys will give you cooties.”

“Not funny. I have my set of priorities, which is a smart thing for any teenager to have. I suggest you do the same and prioritize your life.”

Chloe rolled her eyes. “Oh, please. Okay, what if…what if Aaron Lanter is standing in front of you, butt-naked, offering his body and soul to you?”

Sam closed her book. “What?!” she asked, absolutely appalled. “Gross!”

“Will you stick to your set of priorities then?” Sam wanted to give her best friend a piece of her mind but unfortunately, at that moment, Mr. Collins appeared and she was all ears as soon as he clapped his hands to get the class’ attention.

“Okay everyone,” he said, counting out papers and handing them to the first person in each row.

“What is this? A pop quiz?” Chloe whispered, as the guy in front of her handed her the paper over his shoulder. Her face immediately scrunched up in confusion and despair as she realised her suspicion was true.

“See, Chloe. This is why I set my priorities the way I did,” Sam said, winking teasingly at Chloe.

Chloe sank down in her seat as she stared at the paper in her hand. She looked over at Sam, who had already started to answer the quiz with an ear to ear smile, and chewed the end of her pen in nervous frustration.

It was at times like these that Chloe wished she was Sam. Although they were best friends, they were always very clear about not cheating or giving each other answers. They had shared so many classes together over the years, but not once did Chloe ever ask for Sam’s help and Sam in turn never offered it. Sam had made it clear to Chloe that giving her a “lift” in assignments and exams wouldn’t mean that she was helping her learn; it would just mean that she was helping her become lazy and Chloe understood that.

Sam finished the pop quiz early, while Chloe made it just before the bell rang.

They rose out of their seats and Chloe couldn’t wait to get out of the room. She knew Sam would go on endlessly about the quiz and she really wasn’t interested.

“I think I did well,” Sam started, with a wistful smile playing about her lips. She shoved her books in her bag and waited for Chloe who was smoothing out the skirt of her little electric pink dress.

“I have to call Vander,” Chloe said, hoping to stop Sam from going on about her intellect.

“Again?”

“I’ll see you later, Sam, at lunch time.”

“Okay.” Sam walked out of the classroom, into the hall and made a quick beeline for the ladies’ room. After which she decided to deposit some of her books into her locker, but found Aaron leaning against the wall with his usual extras, Jasper and Zack. She scowled.  The moment Aaron saw Sam, his face lit up, forming a mocking grin.

“Where’s my assignment, Banks?” He asked when Sam came to him. Sam opened and rummaged through her bag. She then noticed Aaron staring at her, looking her up and down. She didn’t like the pause and little smile halfway through his once-over.

“Is something wrong with your eyes, Lanter?” Sam asked sternly. Aaron whispered something to Zack and Jasper and, all together, they burst out laughing. Sam could feel herself blushing hard while standing in front of three guys who were laughing at her nonstop.
