***ZOE***
I doodled at the back of my math book as my teacher droned on about quadratic equations; unable to wait until I left this place to go on holiday for two weeks. I glanced up at the clock; 5 minutes of period 5 left.
Just gazing out of the window, I watched a plane fly by in the distance.
'I'm gonna be on a plane soon' I thought, getting a rush of excitement run through me.
"Zoe?"
I looked at my math teacher.
"Hmmm?"
"Can I see your homework?" I flicked through to the front couple of pages in my book, looking for it. My math teacher stood in front of my desk with his arms folded, staring at me expectantly.
"There you go." I held it up for him to see. He inspected it and gave me a nod of approval.
"Try and make it a bit more readable next time Zoe."
"Ok sir..." I replied, getting ready to fall back into my daydream.
"And Zoe..." I looked back up at him. "Pay attention."
"Ok sir..." I repeated, not listening to him.
I carried on with my doodle and watched the plane go out of sight before noticing equations written on the board. I moaned at how difficult they looked. And I wasn't the only one. The smart kid sitting next to me looked as if he was finding it hard...and he hadn't even tried the first equation yet.
"Extension is page 124 of your text books. I expect all of you in top set to finish both sets of questions and receive full marks."
The problem with my math teacher was that he expected too much. Yes, we were the smartest students in the whole university but we all make mistakes...
'Talking about mistakes'
I chuckled remembering the time my teacher made a mistake during a 2 hour lecture he was giving about Pythagoras
"Something funny?"
And another thing, he hated noise. He had an amazing hearing ability.
"No sir..." I said, getting on with an equation.
"Good, get back to work."
The room was filled with a heavy silence that was almost deafening. It seemed as if each student was struggling silently in some way or another...and then to my delight, the bell rang.
"All right class, have a nice break. Make sure you do the homework, it'll be included in your all round grade."
"Yeah right..." I mumbled. He always said that, but never meant it. I got up and headed for the exit before he could stop me.
"Zoe-" Was all I heard before the door closed behind. My math teacher had this habit of keeping me back and giving me extra homework if he thought that the current homework was too easy.
As I caught a glimpse of red hair, I ran down the corridor.
"Maya! Wait up!" I called, almost out of breath. My bag had a dozen textbooks in it and weighted almost a ton. I could barely walk 10 meters without taking a break.
"Hey Zoe!" she squealed. "You excited?!"
I nodded eagerly. It had been so long since I had been on holiday.
"You're so lucky... I can't go anywhere!" she moaned pointing to the big bulge in her stomach.
"Enough about me! When're you due?"
"In about three weeks." She said as she grinned from ear to ear. "I can't wait to get this thing outta me!"
"Great! That means I'll be back in time..."
"Oh thank god! My mum wanted to deliver it..."
"Maya, I can't del-"
"Yes you can!" she said taking my hands in hers. "For me please?"
She looked at me pleadingly. I wasn't sure, I mean I'd seen it in the movies and...it really put me off. But she was my best friend, and she had no one else (apart from her abusive mother)
"Ok. I'll do it... for you."
She squealed again grabbing me into a bear hug "Thank you so much!"
I coughed dramatically, as if I couldn't breathe.
"Maya I gotta get going; I have to be at the airport in 4 hours." I said pulling away.
"OK make sure you have a good time." She replied, beginning to head in a different direction.
"I will."
"And get yourself a guy!" she yelled, turning back "You need one!"
I held back a laugh "And look where your guy got you..." I mumbled to myself, walking out of the entrance and towards the gate.
My mum was waiting for me on the road in her red Porsche.
"Zoe, hurry up!" she cried "We're getting late!"
I ran up to the car and got in swiftly.
"We have to get Chloe ready and Natalie is still trying to figure out what to wear..."
She drove off at 40mph not caring about the 30mph limit.
