I laughed at the preposterous idea of Alex kidnapping Amber. “Why would Alex kidnap my child?” It just seemed ridiculous to me to even think such an idea.

“Because it isn’t his Rose.”

“What’s that got to do with anything exactly? A lot of people have children which aren’t other people’s but not all of the children are kidnapped for it!” And I still thought it was the seedy company who were fine with kidnapping that he worked for.

“You don’t understand the absolute significance of that do you Rose?”

“Nope but how about looking into your seedy organisation again to see if a baby pops up in the lost and stolen box with a ‘if found return to Rose’ sticker on it’s nappy!”

“Rose that baby not being his meant that you aren’t Jezzebella.” Every line from him now was given with added emphasis as if each line was significant in its own unique way. It just made him sound weird to me.

“He’s known that for quite a while now James and he’s known that has been a possibility every lifetime since Jezzebella died so I don’t think it was anything new to him now.” I tried for the same emphatic tone but just couldn’t do it well enough like James did it to too it justice.

“What’s different is you Rose. For the first time since Jezzebella you didn’t chose him.” This was becoming boring now because I’d heard all this before and still couldn’t see why Alex would steal my baby because of it.

“I’m sure previous me’s have not chosen to be with Alex and he hasn’t gone all Kiddy-catcher on them.” I knew they hadn’t had children because they’d died but the point was still valid in my opinion.

“To him though Rose you are Jezzebella brought back to him. You look exactly like her and after you sleep with him you become pregnant which he automatically assumes is his because you must be his soulmate returned to him. Now imagine being in his situation after losing the love of your life who was carrying your child, your heart and your future to be brutally murdered by their own father of all people because he didn’t want you to have them, then receive what you believe to be a second chance with the only person you ever loved, only to have fate be cruel enough to give them another soulmate who was having their child. How would you feel?” I imagined having the same thing happening to me with James being taken away from me and brought back only to love and impregnate someone else and I realised I’d feel devastated which was the blunt answer. Now I was starting to see where James was coming from about Alex’s possible motives for doing so but I still couldn’t believe- Then all the pieces began to fall into place and the truth horrified me.

Alex was constantly gone from the house when I was pregnant for long bouts with ‘work’ and when he was home he was distracted with some plans, he never wanted me to see James or even leave the house at one point. He’d begun to drink a lot and then when James came back he’d begun to stare at me intently when he thought I was looking and his animosity with James grew until a point where they couldn’t really be in the same room together which must have meant that he knew he wasn’t the father long ago but pretended to still think he was to stay near me. Which meant- “Phone Dimka and ask him if Nick had included Alex with the search for Amber and run it past him.” I knew the answer before he’d even dialed Dimka’s number but waited anyway just to be sure.

He hung up and put his phone away. “He says Nick hasn’t talked to Alex other than a few short words when around everyone else in months and nothing has ever been run by him to include Alexander because he would have said an outright no to it.” My breathing became shallower as everything began to get even clearer.

That means that Alexander wasn’t one of the foot soldiers who was helping to find my daughter, he just wanted to be close to know where we were all looking. “He wanted to be my search partner so he could have me too.”

“What?” James asked next to me but the seething tone meant that he was piecing those pieces together with the rest of our jigsaw clues and wasn’t liking what he was seeing.

“If he had me whether I was willing or not then he would have had his family back, but now instead of it being made easy for him by me going with him earlier he’s just sitting and waiting for me to find him so he can reunite his family again. He’s officially lost it.”

“Honestly Rose, since Jezzebella died he was never really himself again and what little hope of humanity and sanity was left went when fate decided to play it’s cruel game and throw you into the mix.” Admitting the truth was like a kick to the gut several times over.

“Alexander has Amber...”
