Chapter 40 : Nights Like This

"Some people feel the rain. Others just get wet."

My heart tightened in my chest as Byron's eyes scanned my lips, making me clench my seat under my shaking calves. His face was inches from mine and I felt a stutter about to leap from my mouth, but before it could do so he brushed a strand of my hair lightly, tucking it behind my ear and pulled back, letting a daunting laugh escape. My cheeks flushed red from embarrassment.

"There."

My facial expression said it all. I was confused. "W-what?"

A smirk appeared on Byron's face as if he knew exactly what I was thinking. "You told me to prove it so I decided to save your hair from being ruined."

I blinked, having a second to process it all. "Real funny, Byron."

He laughed, "What did you think I was going to do?"

I bit my lip contritely and my gaze fell on the dashboard, avoiding his eyes. "Nothing." I waved my hand dismissively, "Maybe just get on your knees and beg for my forgiveness in the pouring rain. That's all."

He smiled at me once more before starting the car engine again. The rest of the ride was quiet like it was when we first got into the car. I couldn't get my mind off of the fact that I thought Byron Archer was about to kiss me. Well it wasn't my fault anyways - he was the one who made it seem that way - , but I was the one too stupid enough to actually get flustered and believe it was about to happen.

I let out a breath of relief when my house came to view.

"We're here." Byron announced, his eyes scanning outside. The heavy rain pelted hard against the car windows and hammered on the top of the roof sounding like an intruder wanting to get inside the car. "Here."

I looked down at Byron's hand, a sweater that he had grabbed for in the back seat. He was handing it to me, but for what?

"The rain." He answered my thoughts when he noticed I wouldn't take it. I mentally slapped myself. Of course it was for the rain, Cerise.

I took it and adjusted it over my head, using it as a shelter from the cold rain. Opening my door, I hopped out of the car greeted by drunk winds and pelting rain. Byron did the same and we both closed our doors behind before hiking to my door step.

"I wouldn't be too surprised if you wake up in the morning with a cold." I said to the male in front of me who was using nothing at all to protect him from the pouring rain. I got under the patio roof of my doorstep, removing the sweater from above me. "Here, you'll get sick." I stretched it out for him to take.

"Awe, you actually care." He said, not bothering to take the piece of clothing from me.

"I care for everyone." I said, pulling his arm so he could get under the shelter. He let out a groan before getting under. The water had drenched his shirt making his muscular torso more transparent through the black shirt he was wearing.

"So just how will you prove it to me?" I asked over the sound of the loud rain, he removed his wet blonde hair from his eyes, turning to face me.

"I don't know." He answered simply, which made me frown and get a bit frustrated.

"You can't just give me that answer, Byron." The raindrops rolled off my cheeks, resembling real tears. "One minute you're incredibly mean to me and the next you're this guy who - I - " Everything started to come out in an annoying stutter. "You make it look like you're about to kiss me and then you -"
