Chapter 55

A/N: I didn't have time to reply to the comments on Chp 53 or whatever it was, so I thought I'd tell you the super sneaky link that most of you figured out anyway :P Liam's grandfather died just after Theo learned that his biological grandfather is really ill and about to die, meaning that they actually share the same grandfather, meaning (drum roll, please) Theo and Liam are cousins :) Sneaky, huh? *Not really* Shut up, brain, it feels cool to me :) A/N

Luna’s P.O.V

I emerged early from an uncomfortable sleep, groggy with an aching neck and back. The first thing I saw when my eyes peeled open was the stark white hospital wall opposite me. The night before came crashing back, and my heart sank to the pit of my stomach. My mom tried to kill herself. I shut my eyes again and snuggled back into whatever comfortable surface I was leaning against, hoping my dreams would swallow me up again – and then I remembered who I was leaning against.

My eyes flew open again and I tried to sit up, but Alex’s arm was still around me, holding me against him. I had curled up into a ball on my chair, my legs tucked under me, and my head was still resting on Alex’s shoulder. When I lifted my head, I saw he was still asleep, mouth slightly open and breathing slow and deep. He looked peaceful and younger without his usual cocky grin.

I twisted my head and suddenly realised that Derek and Ruby-May weren’t there. I figured they’d gone home, or maybe just gone to get breakfast, but then I spotted a piece of folded white paper on Derek’s chair.

Gently slipping myself out from under Alex’s arm, I leaned forward and picked up the sheet of paper, unfolding it and holding it close to my sleep-bleary eyes. I recognised Ruby-May’s neat swirling handwriting.

We’ll be back before you know it. Love, R-M and D X

And then, underneath, was Derek’s more spidery writing:

P.S. We’re going to leave Belle and Dave a note, but no one else knows where we’re going. Please don’t tell. X

I sighed and dropped the piece of paper. It fluttered slowly to the floor like a broken bird.

Now all four of my best friends had disappeared. And I wasn’t sure when they’d be back.

Next to me, Alex stirred, his head lolling onto the other shoulder. I didn’t want to wake him, but at the same time, I wanted someone to talk to. I gently nudged his leg with my foot, and when that didn’t work, I kicked him in the shins.

Alex’s head lifted with a small grunt. He rubbed his eyes blearily.

“Oh, hey. You finally waking up?” I said nonchalantly.

Alex rubbed his shin and glanced at me. “How long have you been awake?”

“Bout ten minutes,” I lied.

He glanced round me. “Where did the others go?”

I swallowed and picked up the piece of paper. “They left this.” I passed it to him.  Alex read it quickly.

“Ah, shit.” He dropped it back on the floor and rubbed his face again. “They’ve done a Theo.”

“They said they’d be back in a day,” I said quickly. “They haven’t gone after him.”

Alex glanced at me. “Where have they gone?”

He wasn’t getting the answer out of me that easily. “They didn’t want me to tell anyone.”
