Epilogue

SHE WAS MY ASSIGNMENT. My mission. And it was my duty as a Vampire to kill them all. They were enemies to us; they've killed many of our kind. But I just can't; well at least...not her. I've done this many times. Why now? Why now that I've chosen not to harm this one human? She's just like the rest of them. No. She deserves to die. Does she? I looked at her pale face. She was asleep. Her body was lying on a sleeping mat where her limp arms fell over. Maybe not. I pulled out a piece of paper in my pocket and unfolded it. I stared at the writings for a long time. It read:

Scarlett-Gail Annette Hughes
Age 17, D.O.B. - Feb.25, 91
Location: Nelson, Virginia
Total Vampire Kills: 48

I turned my head to the side thoughtfully then walked over to the girl's unconscious body, knife ready in hand.

Chapter 1

I LOOKED AT THE REPORT IN MY HANDS, reading it thoroughly enough. Damien Fletcher was his name. And from what it says on the paper in front of me, his location is in 54 Walt Street, New Jersey. It brought me to an old secluded apartment. Every week, the members of the Deltroy - a group created to eliminate vampires - are given an assignment. I joined it six years ago with my father, until he was killed during one of his assignments. And in each assignment we are given the character profile of a vampire. Our only task is to kill that vampire. This is my latest assignment, so far.

"Are you sure this is the place?"

"Yes Owen, for the tenth time yes," I displayed my irritation well enough, or so I thought. Owen was my "partner in crime" and rarely accompanied me in one of my raids. He was a really tall blonde. And that pretty much described his character. His hair was long enough to nearly cover his entire forehead. And he always wore this gray sun jacket. I looked outside the car window of a sedan. Owen and I waited a few minutes until the sun had set - an important thing we have to do to avoid any attention.

"We've been waiting here for hours!" I finally blew up. It's been so long, my ass is starting to get numb. "I'm going." I started heading out of the car.

Owen called after me, "No need to yell. Oh and don't forget your gun!"

I grabbed the gun and walked the few yards to the abandoned apartment. The door was open. Actually, there was no door. Weird. It was too dark to see anything clearly, but my eyesight was good enough to see the doors that connected all the empty rooms. I walked around cautiously for a few minutes. Every now and then I would here a few clattering from behind the old furniture, but it always ended up as a scrummy rat. But I could sense him; he was here for sure, and vampires these days were good in hiding - really good.

Then there was a loud CLANG behind me. I quickly pulled my gun out of me belt. Another clang and this time it was closer than the first. I walked slowly forward with my gun ready in my hand. Then a loud bang, what the hell is going on? Before I knew it I was falling with some heavy force on my back and I dropped my gun somewhere. From the sounds of it, it probably slid way far out of reach. He was on top of me now, and his grip was stronger than I expected. After a few long seconds of groaning and kicking, my left arm got free and punched him hard on the chin. He made another move and jumped towards me again, holding me down - not as tight as before.
By a short glimpse in the light I saw his face: dark brown hair - just like mine - and light blue eyes, though I had brown eyes. He had a completely terrified look on his face that I could not understand, and have never seen in a vampire before. He caught me off guard and cut my wrist with a pocket knife.

"Fuck!" I pulled his arm towards my mouth and bit him as hard as I could. I heard the crunching of his flesh and the blood that dripped onto my lips. He dropped the pocket knife and backed away.

I held out me left hand and squeezed my wrist. The cut went through my leather suit, but that's not what really worried me. It was bleeding, and luckily it missed by half a centimeter to a vain. Damn it! I turned to the guy holding me. I bet he didn't see it coming, but when I punched his nose after the cut, I had enough time to elbow him right in the family jewels. He grunted at the impact and fell on the ground. Not hard enough? He groaned and rolled over on all fours. That gave me time to kick him twice, but that was enough to knock him unconscious.
