At first, it was only the guitar, then he was singing.
"Blackbird singing in the dead of night,
take these broken wings and learn to fly."
I crawled very slowly to the side of the fence where I could hear him the loudest. Mommy's not gonna be too happy about my clothes when she sees me.
"All your life, you were only
waiting for this moment to arise."
Pushing my body closest to the fence, I tilted my face so I could look through the gap between the fence and dirt better.
Ugh!
No luck, I barely saw his red worn out converse.
"Blackbird singing in the dead of night,
take these sunken eyes and learn to see."
Why did I feel sad?
I always thought singing was supposed to make you happy. In school, we'd clap our hands and dance around when we sing. It was always happy.
"All your life, you were only
waiting for this moment to be free."
I moved my dirty palm towards my heart, then my cheeks. Daddy said crying is okay. Daddy said when you've cried, you can be happy again.
So I cried, and I listened, and I cried some more.
If he didn't cry, could he be happy too?
